Flood prevention efforts reduce insurance costs for property owners

Scottsdale flood insurance policy holders will continue to save more than $855,000 annually thanks to the city?s flood prevention and management efforts.? The figure equates to an average savings of $99 per year for each of the 8,670 policy holders.

Scottsdale recently scored tops in the state among municipalities during a federal floodplain management audit, ranking in the top 5 percent of all U.S. cities and counties.

As a result, policy holders in designated special flood hazard areas will continue to see flood insurance premiums reduced by 20 percent. Policy holders outside special flood hazard areas will still see their premiums reduced by 5 percent.

In its audit, FEMA?s Insurance Services Office stated Scottsdale excelled in several flood control and management areas, including:

??Maintaining flood-prone areas as open space -- about five square miles of Scottsdale?s special flood hazard areas are preserved as open space
??Proactively inspecting watercourses to identify and remedy stormwater code violations
??Providing flood zone information to the public
