Why Kids' Brain Cancer Treatment Is Not Always Effective ...

In this regard, a new study has highlighted various important aspects on the manner in which brain cancer therapy in kids fail to offer desired results, almost always.

During the course of the study, which was carried out by a team of experts from the Hospital for Sick Children in at Toronto, it was observed that in medulloblastoma, the tiny tumors which generally have a tendency of spreading to various other regions of the brain as well as the human spine are not genetically similar to the main tumor from which they arrive in the first place.

As a result, it has been frequently found that treatments for such cases of brain cancer that generally tend to target the primary tumor fail more often than not for shutting down the secondary front of the cancers, which is primarily dubbed as metastases in medical parlance.

While expressing his opinion regarding the findings of the study, along with mentioning what all pros and cons the severe issue can have on the overall health, development and life expectancy of kids suffering from the precarious forms of cancer, the lead author of the study, Dr. Michael Taylor, said: ?We?ve been studying the wrong part of the disease all this time. In the dish we can cure the disease because we?re only studying the primary tumor. But then when we give the drugs to the kids they?re not working on the metastases?.

Dr. Michael Taylor is a pediatric neurosurgeon by profession and is also a senior researcher at Sick Kids.
