Snooki Channeling Rihanna? (omg!)

Snooki Channeling Rihanna?

Everybody's favorite self-proclaimed guidette, Snooki, debuted a new hairdo today via Twitter.

"A sneaky peek!" Snooki tweeted along with a photo. "I went mega red!"

The bold coloring choice seems reminiscent of another natural brunette, Rihanna, who has made her penchant for red locks somewhat of a trademark.

Snooki credited New York hair stylist Bradley Moreland for her dazzling transformation.

Asian stocks trim losses, Italian auction looms (Reuters)

SINGAPORE (Reuters) ? Asian stocks slipped on Thursday on weakness in the U.S. and European share markets and caution ahead of an Italian debt sale, though year-end window dressing of portfolios by some traders helped trim losses.

European shares are expected to inch higher, reversing some of the previous session's losses, with cautiousness ahead of the key Italian debt auction by Italy seen limiting the gains.

Spreadbetters expect London's FTSE (.FTSE) to open up 0.04 percent, Frankfurt's DAX (.GDAXI) to open up 0.3 percent, and Paris' CAC 40 (.FCHI) to open up 0.3 percent.

The euro extended losses against the dollar to near a one-year low, and a 10-year low against the yen, while the sell-off in stocks and a firm U.S. currency helped crude oil snap a six-session rally and kept gold prices near a three-month low.

The Nikkei (.N225) ended 0.3 percent lower, recouping some of its 1.1 percent intraday loss. The MSCI ex-Japan Asia Pacific index (.MIAPJ0000PUS) also shed 0.3 percent, weighed down by consumer and material stocks. Both indexes look set to be down about 18 percent during 2011.

Traders said Italy's sale of up to 8.5 billion euros ($11 billion) of debt later on Thursday will provide further cues for risky assets.

The auction is seen as the first test of banks' willingness to buy longer-term sovereign debt with the nearly 500 billion euros they borrowed last week from the European Central Bank.

While Italy's short-term funding costs halved at an auction on Wednesday, market players are worried that thin volumes prevalent across markets near the end of the year could complicate its efforts to sell longer-dated bonds.

"If it goes well, it's an indication that, one, yield is coming down, so the cost of funding is falling for the Italian government," said Martin Lakos, division director at Macquarie Private Wealth.

"And, two, if there's demand for the paper, that's a sign of confidence, which is what the market's in real need of."

EURO, OIL, GOLD SLIP

The euro weakened in Asia, pressured by stop-loss selling from Japanese retail investors as well as some offloading by exporters, with moves amplified in poor year-end liquidity and traders said the currency is likely to stay vulnerable.

The single currency hit $1.2887, moving closer to its 2011 trough of $1.2860 on January 10. Against the yen, the euro skidded to a 10-year trough around 100.70, before steadying at 100.88.

At 0615 GMT, the euro traded at 1.2926 versus the dollar and 100.47 versus the yen.

"Nobody sees anything on the horizon that could be mildly positive for the euro," said Rob Ryan, FX strategist for BNP Paribas in Singapore.

The one factor that may lend the euro some support is market positioning, which is already tilted heavily toward being short the euro, Ryan said, adding that another is the potential for fund repatriation by European players.

Crude oil, which had gained for six sessions on heightened supply worries after Iran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, eased as traders viewed the threat as rhetoric.

"A big increase in U.S. crude oil stocks and the falling euro against the dollar are the main pressure points for the market at the moment," said Ken Hasegawa, a derivatives manager with brokerage Newedge in Tokyo.

"We also had six consecutive days gaining in the oil market, so it is not strange to see some profit-taking from these sharp gains."

Brent eased three cents to $107.53 a barrel by 0207 GMT, adding to a loss of nearly $2 the day before.

Gold wallowed near a three-month low on Thursday, remaining under pressure due to a firm dollar, while investors fretted over the Italian bond auction.

Spot gold edged down 0.3 percent to $1,550.90 an ounce by 0022 GMT, on course for an 11-percent decline in December. It hit a three-month low of $1,549.24 in the previous session.

AFRICA/NIGERIA - "Terrorism threatens us all, Muslims and Christians, but together we can overcome it" says to Fides the Archbishop of Abuja

Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "I hope that these people have not died in vain, the Nigerians are realizing that terrorism threatens us all, Christians and Muslims," says to Fides His Exc. Mgr. John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, Archbishop of Abuja , the federal capital of Nigeria, where at Christmas at least 35 people were killed in an attack that hit the church of Santa Teresa, in the district of Madalla. Also at Christmas other bombs exploded in some churches in other parts of Nigeria, including a Pentecostal church in Jos, capital of Plateau State. The attacks were attributed to the Islamic Boko Haram sect.
"The day after Christmas, when I went to the site of the attack along with the Nuncio, in the presence of the Minister of the Interior, I took the opportunity to launch a strong appeal through the local press to the Islamic leadership of Nigeria to do something " Mgr. Onaiyekan tells Fides. "Even if the Muslim religious leaders continue to assert that members of Boko Haram do not belong to true Islam, there must however recognize that these are Muslims, it does not matter whether they are good or bad, and that they have the greatest opportunity to identify them and demonstrate that they are doing it. "
"A lot of importance was given to my statement ? Mgr. Onaiyekan continues - and this has attracted several comments in the Nigerian media. A number of important organizations and Islamic groups are now condemning the attacks. I just received a call from a Muslim group who visited the injured in hospital and asked me to visit the church of Santa Teresa.
"It is no time to say whether we are Muslims or Christians, we have to face the problem as Nigerians who all live under the threat of these people. Among the dead there were also Muslims. The bomb exploded in the street, opposite the church, and affected not only the faithful who came out of the Mass but also passers-by. I personally prayed and blessed a man who was seriously injured while he was in the car at the time of the explosion. And this person was a Muslim, " says the Archbishop of Abuja.
Mgr. Onaiyekan reveals that the local Church had organized a security service to protect the places of worship. "These brave young men set up check posts at the two entrances of the road leading to the church of Santa Teresa, checking every car that passed. The bomber?s car refused to stop. The boys followed it up in front of the facade of the church, and managed to block it. While they were arguing with the driver, he detonated the bomb. Therefore it was a suicide bombing. Among the dead there is one of our young people working for the surveillance, and at least 3 members of the police, including a Muslim, " says Mgr. Onaiyekan.
"This is terrorism, which spares no one," underlines the Archbishop. "When these people say they want an Islamic State, it is not a State that gives more freedom to the Muslims. We know what they mean by Islamic State, we have the example of the Somalia of the Shabab. I believe that we have finally managed to make it clear to the vast majority of our fellow Muslims that terrorism carried out by the Boko Haram is not only against Christians. Only together, Christians and Muslims, we can go far, " concluded Mgr.Onaiyekan. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 28/12/2011)

Can foreign tourists help US economy?

(AP) ? Agustina Ocampo is the kind of foreign traveler businesses salivate over.

The 22-year-old Argentine recently dropped more than $5,000 on food, hotels and clothes in Las Vegas during a trip that also took her to Seattle's Space Needle, Disneyland and the San Diego Zoo. But she doubts she will return soon.

"It is a little bit of a headache," said Ocampo, a student who waited months to find out whether her tourist visa application would be approved.

More than a decade after the federal government strengthened travel requirements after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, foreign visitors say getting a temporary visa remains a daunting and sometimes insurmountable hurdle.

The tourism industry hopes to change that with a campaign to persuade Congress to overhaul the State Department's tourist visa application process.

"After 9/11, we were all shaken and there was a real concern for security, and I still think that concern exists," said Jim Evans, a former hotel chain CEO heading a national effort to promote foreign travel to the U.S.

At the same time, he said, the U.S. needs "to be more cognizant of the importance of every single traveler."

Tourism leaders said the decline in foreign visitors over the past decade is costing American businesses and workers $859 billion in untapped revenue and at least half a million potential jobs at a time when the slowly recovering economy needs both.

While the State Department has beefed up tourist services in recent years, reducing wait times significantly for would-be visitors will likely be a challenge as officials try to balance terrorist threats and illegal immigration with tight budgets that limit hiring.

"Security is job one for us," said Edward Ramotowski, managing director of the department's visa services. "The reason we have a visa system is to enforce the immigration laws of the United States."

Anti-immigration proponents argue travel to the U.S. is already too accessible and that allowing more visitors would put the nation at greater risk.

"Everybody would like to find a way to admit as many people as possible to visit here providing that they visit and then go home," said Jessica Vaughan, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, an anti-immigration group based in Washington, D.C.

"A lot of consular officers underestimate how much people want to come and live here," she said.

Nearly 7.6 million nonimmigrant visas were issued in 2001, compared with fewer than 6.5 million in 2010. The number of visa applicants also dropped sharply after 2001. Those combined forces pushed the U.S. share of global travelers down to 12 percent last year, from 17 percent before 2001.

The proposed immigration overhaul has largely been driven by the U.S. Travel Association, the tourism industry's lobbying giant, and has been endorsed by business titans such as the National Retail Federation, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Republicans and Democrats in Congress are backing the proposed changes through six bills in the House and Senate.

Geoff Freeman, the travel association's chief operating officer, said the State Department should be required to keep visa interview wait times at a maximum of 10 days.

"Every day a person is waiting for that interview is a day a person cannot be here supporting the American economy," he said.

For most foreigners, taking a last-minute business or leisure trip to New York, Los Angeles, Miami or other U.S. travel hubs would be nearly impossible. The average wait time for a visa interview in Rio de Janeiro, for example, was 87 days, according to the State Department.

The Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan agency that audits federal programs, concluded that wait times are likely much longer than reported because some department employees artificially reduce the wait times by not scheduling interviews during high-demand periods.

The vast majority of visitors enter through the country's visa waiver program, which allows travelers from 36 nations with good relationships with the U.S. to temporarily visit without a visa. Travel proponents want to add nations whose residents are unlikely to illegally move to the U.S., including Argentina, Brazil, Poland and Taiwan.

Tourists from the rest of the world, including India, China, Mexico and other nations with affluent travelers looking to use their passports, must obtain a nonimmigrant visa. The process can be expensive and time-consuming.

People living far from a visa processing center must arrange travel to the interview location, not knowing whether they will be approved. Roughly 78 percent of all tourist visas were approved so far in 2011.

Tourism proponents want the department to embrace videoconferencing as a way to interview more people quickly. The department has no plans to implement videoconferencing interviews because of safety and technological concerns, Ramotowski said.

In-person interviews weren't the norm before 9/11, when consular officials had the authority to approve travelers based on an application alone. Since then, however, screenings have become more strenuous, with fingerprint checks and facial recognition screening of photographs.

The State Department has made moves to boost its tourist services in recent years, transferring employees from underworked offices to bustling embassies and consular posts. Many visa processing centers are also operating under extended hours.

Other proposed changes include granting more multi-entry visas and charging premium fees to tourists who want a visa right away, similar to the premium passport fee charged to Americans with last-minute passport requests. The tourism industry also wants more visa processing officers and to allow travelers to submit applications in their native language.

"We can't afford to treat them in a way that gives them an impression that maybe they aren't welcome," said Rolf Lundberg, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's top lobbyist.

To help make the U.S. appear more welcoming, Congress approved last year a $200 million annual marketing campaign.

In Las Vegas, where travelers to the Strip have traditionally kept Nevada's economy afloat, tourism and government leaders are desperate to keep businesses open and create jobs in a state with the nation's highest unemployment rate.

"The industries affected by tourism are all behind it," said Republican Rep. Joe Heck of southern Nevada, who has sponsored a bill in the House that would require shorter visa interview delays, among other measures. "We need the jobs."

Ocampo, who spent her vacation shopping at upscale boutiques and visiting family in California, said she would be more eager to come back if she knew her business was wanted.

"Everyone wants to visit the Statue of Liberty and Disneyland," she said.

Pygmy Hippo at Night

ShareShare ?ShareEmail

Video of the Week #23, December 28th, 2011

From: Caught on Video: Endangered Pygmy Hippo Seen Slipping through Nighttime Liberia by John R. Platt at Extinction Countdown.

Original source: Forestry Development Authority of Liberia, Fauna and Flora International, and the Zoological Society of London(ZSL) on YouTube

Footage of the elusive pygmy hippo in its native habitat is very rarely captured. This week?s video provides some brief glimpses of a specimen as it darts between the underbrush in Liberia?s Sapo National Park. The video was shot using camera traps set by the Forestry Development Authority of Liberia, Fauna and Flora International and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Very little is known about the demographics and behavior of the pygmy hippos in the wild, and conservationists fear that populations may become extinct due to overhunting and habitat destruction. The efforts of the ZSL aim to fund local research projects in Liberia in order to better understand the ecological requirements of these elusive creatures.

Let the game begin: NBA season kicks off

LeBron James (Reuters / Mike Stone)

The focus has finally shifted to the woodwork as the long-anticipated NBA season, shortened to 66 games, kicks off in America with five spectacular games.

The Celtics and Knicks opened the festivities on Sunday. Carmelo Anthony stole the show in Madison Square Garden scoring 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and the New York Knicks survived the quest to beat the Boston Celtics 106-104.

The other game saw a rematch of last season?s NBA finals with Dallas taking on Miami. LeBron James had 37 points, 10 rebounds and six assists as the Heat settled accounts for the NBA finals with a 105-94 victory that wasn't as close as the score suggests.

The action then moved to Los Angeles where Kobe Bryant et al had been looking forward to a successful season opener. Their plans came to pieces courtesy of the Chicago Bulls though.Their leader, Derrick Rose, scored 22 points and hit a go-ahead jumper with 4.8 seconds left to snatch a 88-87 win for the Bulls. Luol Deng added 21 points and secured the Bulls? win by blocking Kobe Bryant right before the buzzer. Bryant scored 28 points and committed eight turnovers while playing with a torn wrist ligament for the Lakers.

Elsewhere, Orlando?s visit to Oklahoma City brought nothing gainful for Dwight Howard & Co, 97-89, while Chris Paul made a successful Clippers debut at Golden State in the nightcap, 105-86.

Globe-trotting turtle returns to sea after long rehab

A world-traveling sea turtle found stranded in the Netherlands is back home in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday after three long years of rest and rehabilitation.

The animal, an endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, was found frigid and near-dead off the coast of the Netherlands in 2008, thousands of miles from the Gulf waters these turtles call home. It was dubbed Johnny Vasco de Gama by its European rescuers.

Marine biologists suspect Johnny became caught in cold currents and was "cold-stunned," a condition that shuts down internal organs and can kill sea turtles. Staff members of the Rotterdam Zoo stabilized the ailing turtle and sent him to the Ocean?rio de Lisboa aquarium in Portugal the following summer.

Report: Phishing attack targets Apple customers

A ?vast phishing attack? that attempts to capture the credit card information of Apple customers was launched on Christmas day, according to a report from Mac security-software company Intego.

The phishing email, as posted by Intego.
In a posting on its Mac Security blog, Intego says that the attack is an attempt to fool Apple customers into clicking on a link under the guise of updating the billing information of their Apple accounts:

If you click on the link in the message, you will be taken to a realistic looking sign-in page, then, after entering your Apple ID and password, you?ll be taken to a page asking you to update your account profile, notably entering your credit card information. Again, this page looks realistic, and many of the elements it contains are taken from Apple?s own webpages.

Intego reports that the messages are being sent with the subject ?Apple update your Billing Information? from a spoofed email address of ?appleid@id.apple.com,? though of course future emails from the same source might vary somewhat.

If you hover your mouse over the hyperlink in the (impressively forged) email address, you?ll see a floating box that reveals the real destination of that link: the telltale chain of four numbers that specifies a numeric IP address, rather than a link to somewhere within the apple.com domain. As Intego rightly points out, ?if it?s not something.apple.com (it could be www.apple.com, store.apple.com, or something else), then it?s bogus.?

In addition to hovering your cursor over any links before you click on them, another way to stay secure is to enter links yourself in your browser rather than click on them in emails. If you type store.apple.com into your browser, you know it?s a legitimate site. If you?re using Safari any secure connection to Apple (i.e., any URL beginning with https: rather than http:) will show a green verification item in the top right corner of the address bar. (There are similar indications in other browsers.) And no legitimate site will ask for personal information, especially of the credit-card variety, without using a secure connection.

This isn?t the first such scam posing as an email from Apple recently. In a less sophisticated attack earlier this month, a fake MobileMe message requested that users send an email containing their username and password.

In general, you should be skeptical about any email messages, however legitimate they appear to be, that ask you to go to a website or compose an email containing personal data.

McIlroy: ?I don?t plan to be playing tournament golf in my forties.?

Rory looking to add to his trophy case in '12

Thanks to Shoshana for passing along one of the various end-of-the-year articles on 22-year-old Rory McIlroy. This one, penned by the Irish Independent?s Dermot Gilleece, reveals an interesting quote from the U.S. Open champ about his playing career:

Like when he explained why he had no plans to buy his own aircraft. ?You?ve got to fly 300 hours a year to make financial sense of it,? he said. Then, when I pointed out that P?draig Harrington made such a purchase in the belief it would extend his playing career, McIlroy replied: ?I don?t plan to be playing tournament golf in my forties.?

Surprising and not so surprising (both about the plane and not playing in his 40s). Let?s not make too much of it, though. After all, there?s plenty of time for him to change his mind. Say he?s won 17 majors (or one short of the record if Tiger ends up passing Jack Nicklaus) just before his 40th birthday, will he keep competing in quest of the 18th?

McIlroy also discusses that his mind is focused on the upcoming year?s majors, starting with the Masters, of course. He?s learned from some of his mistakes in 2011. For example, he?ll share a house with his parents instead of with his pals from Northern Ireland ? probably a good idea, not just for the emotional support his mom and dad will provide, but much less chance for distractions.

Meanwhile, Rory told Brian Keogh of the Irish Golf Desk that his Masters meltdown might have triggered his decision to ultimately switch management companies this fall, leaving ISM?s Chubby Chandler for the smaller, Dublin-based firm, Horizon:

He even concedes that his public humiliation may have played a part in his ditching of manager Chubby Chandler for Dublin based Horizon and a move to make more decisions for himself.

He said: ?It might have set the wheels in motion in some way. I was getting advice from left, right and centre after the Masters. From people I was close to and from people that just wanted to offer some sort?of help.

?I really had to filter everything through and try and make decisions myself. Sometimes I felt I let people make decisions for me instead of taking my career into my own hands and deciding this is what I want?to do, this is where I want to go.?That day at the Masters helped me do that.

?I think the biggest thing was listening to myself. You can take so much advice from so many different people. Actually listening to your own (inner voice). I said after the Masters I was very honest with myself and I needed to do some things with my golf game.

Wives in ads, kids on the bus as GOP voting nears (AP)

CONCORD, N.H. ? Mitt Romney's wife gushes about his silly side and devotion to their five sons and 16 grandchildren. Rick Santorum's college-age daughter opines online about missing the campus coffee shop and chats with friends about their Friday night plans. Jon Huntsman's daughters generate much-needed buzz for him with a joint Twitter account and online videos, including at least one that went viral.

Days away from voting in the Republican presidential race, the path to the nomination is quickly becoming a crowded family affair with spouses and offspring pitching in and doing far more than just smiling from the sidelines.

Ann Romney, Anita Perry and Callista Gingrich are starring in new TV ads for the husbands they've loyally campaigned for. Romney extols her husband's character and says "to me that makes a huge difference" in a candidate. Perry tells the "old-fashioned American story" of how she and her husband were high school sweethearts who had to wait until he was done flying airplanes around the world for the Air Force before they could marry. Callista Gingrich wishes the nation a Merry Christmas "from our family to yours" in husband Newt Gingrich's new holiday-themed TV ad.

Candidate kids, including those born to Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, are helping, too, acting as surrogates, strategists and, in some cases, sounding boards for parents competing for the right to challenge President Barack Obama next fall.

"There are times when I wonder why I'm not sitting in the coffee shop on campus with my friends, lightheartedly discussing ('Saturday Night Live') videos, how bad the cafeteria is, what our plans are for Friday night or how absolutely swamped we are with school work," Santorum's daughter Elizabeth lamented in a recent blog post. "But this is where God wanted me."

She has taken time off from her junior year at the University of Dallas to serve as a self-described "field staffer/phone banker/chauffeur/surrogate speaker," for her father, primarily in the leadoff caucus state of Iowa.

Her father, who hopes Iowa's socially conservative voters turn out for him on caucus night Jan. 3, rolled out an ad late last week featuring the entire Santorum clan, including the family German shepherd, Schotzy. The spot highlights his 21-year marriage to his wife, Karen, notes that he has coached Little League and introduces viewers to the youngest of the couple's seven children, Isabella, born in 2008 with a genetic disorder.

Sometimes the family members campaign with the candidates and other times they go it alone.

Such family involvement carries risks and benefits. The stories they tell often humanize the candidates and help voters relate to them. But the things they say, and do, can sometimes cause headaches for the campaign advisers who are left to try to figure out a way out.

While Rick Perry spent several days campaigning in Iowa recently, his wife was hundreds of miles away in New Hampshire emphasizing his small-town upbringing and conservative values at a retirement community chapel. Audience members then peppered her with detailed questions about such subjects as taxes, immigration and the death penalty.

"She handled them quite well," said Sid Schoeffler, an independent voter from Concord. "When she knew the answer or knew the campaign's story line, she recited it. And when she didn't know, she said so. I thought that was refreshing."

"Compared to what I expected, she made a favorable impression," he said. "But whether it's enough to swing my vote, I don't know yet."

Earlier in the year, as Bachmann rose in public opinion, her husband, Marcus, was forced to defend his Christian counseling business from claims that its therapies included "curing" people of being gay. With Bachmann now near the back of the GOP pack in polls, Marcus Bachmann joined her at the start of her bus tour of Iowa's 99 counties but was quickly replaced by four of their five children.

"My husband had to go home. We're small-business owners and someone had to go home and mind the store," Bachmann told one crowd. And at one point, Bachmann, who began losing her voice in the middle of the jam-packed tour, turned over the microphone to son Harrison, a teacher who talks up his family's ties to the state, and teased: "Harrison, say some nice things about me and you'll get extra cookies."

In Paul's case, he's probably hoping validation from his son, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., a favorite of the tea party, will give him a boost with that pivotal constituency in Iowa. Rand Paul is also appearing in a television ad for his father.

Romney's five-son family and wife of more than four decades have long been a part of his presidential campaigns. But the spotlight has been shining more brightly on his wife and their brood in recent weeks as the campaign seeks to cast the former Massachusetts governor as a person of "steadiness and constancy" while drawing a contrast with the thrice-married Gingrich.

Ann Romney also has spoken openly about how her husband supported her through her struggle with multiple sclerosis.

Huntsman's wife and the couple's three oldest daughters are near-constant companions in New Hampshire, the only state where the former Utah governor is earnestly campaigning. His daughters recently generated a huge amount of buzz with a video spoof of an ad by former rival Herman Cain. They donned oversized glasses and fake mustaches to look like Cain's campaign manager.

"We are shamelessly promoting our dad like no other candidate's family has," one daughter said in the ad. "But then again, no one's ever seen a trio like the Jon2012 girls."

iMAME app gets pulled from iTunes

In barely enough time to get out of the app store and into the hearts of retro gamers everywhere, the iMAME emulator on iOS has already been erased from iTunes -- just days since its release. Alas, that lack of any official endorsement may have reared its ugly head. Well, it was good while it lasted. Guess we'll carry on saving up for that Vita purchase...

Yahoo to weigh deals for Asian assets: sources (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Yahoo Inc is discussing a plan to slash its stakes in China's Alibaba Group and its Japanese affiliate as part of a complicated share transaction valued at roughly $17 billion, sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The deal is expected to be considered by Yahoo's board on Thursday, one of the sources said, adding that the board was not interested in entertaining offers for the entire company at this point.

In the deal under contemplation, Yahoo would effectively transfer most of its 40 percent slice of Alibaba back to the Chinese company and all of its stake in Yahoo Japan to Softbank Corp in return for cash and assets, one of the sources said.

The exact value of the deal would depend on how the assets are valued, one source said.

Shares of Yahoo, which had languished in the red along with much of the technology sector on Wednesday, reversed course and ended the session almost 6 percent higher at $15.99.

Yahoo was not immediately available for comment. The possible deals were first reported in The New York Times.

Israel?s image tanks as it slowly loses support of US media and Europe

Brand Israel copy
Image via AustraliansforPalestine.com

The Reut Institute, an Israeli government-linked think tank, had it exactly right when it recently stated that Israel needs "to harness the support of liberal and progressive circles." The problem for the institute, and the Israeli government, though, is that the reverse is happening. Israel's image is tanking, slow as the process is. Israel's tanking image in "liberal and progressive circles" is freaking the likes of Jeffrey Goldberg out, who has been hard at work recently policing the discourse on Israel.

Two items today highlight this important change.

First, an important Salon article written by Jordan Michael Smith, a journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post, who rightly explains how the "media consensus on Israel is collapsing":

There is reason to believe, however, that more flexible, productive positions will be expressed in the U.S. media. Slowly but unmistakably, space is opening up among the commentariat for new, critical ideas about Israel and its relationship to the United States.

Smith is right, and he points to the New York Times' Roger Cohen and Thomas Friedman as being on the front lines of this push (as well as this site, among others).

Secondly, the U.S. has once again been sidelined in international efforts to bring a solution to Israel/Palestine. An important statement by European members of the UN Security Council blasted recent announcements of illegal settlements in the West Bank. From Ha'aretz:

In the statement by EU UNSC members released on Tuesday, the ambassadors from Britain, France, Germany and Portugal issued a joint statement branding the Israeli settlements in Palestinian occupied territories and East Jerusalem as illegal under international law.

"We call on the Israeli government to reverse these steps," the statement said. "The viability of the Palestinian state that we want to see and the two-state solution that is essential for Israel's long-term security are threatened by the systematic and deliberate expansion of settlements."

The statement, issued following the 15-country Security Council's closed-door discussion on the situation in the Middle East, condemned Israeli settlers' violence against the Palestinians, including the burning of the Nebi Akasha mosque in West Jerusalem and the Burqa mosque in the West Bank.

The statement is proof that Western support of Israel is slowly eroding. Europe is frustrated, and that frustration will only be amplified by the dismissive Israeli response.

It's true, as the Salon article states, that "official U.S. foreign policy has changed little." And with an election year approaching, U.S. policy on Israel will continue to be even more out of step with Europe and the rest of the world. The only question, though, is how long that will last.

Bahrain police fire tear gas after funeral (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Police in Bahrain on Sunday fired tear gas at thousands of demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans after the funeral of an elderly man who witnesses say died from tear gas inhalation.

The unrest Sunday is the fourth straight day of clashes between opposition supporters and security forces along a main highway west of the Bahraini capital Manama. At least 40 people have been killed since February, when Bahrain's Shiite majority started campaigning for more rights from Sunni rulers in the Gulf kingdom that is the home of the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Amir al-Mouali said his 73-year-old neighbor, Abdulali Ali Ahmed, was taken to a hospital Saturday morning after struggling to breath during a night of heavy clashes near his home along the Budaiya highway, which connects a string of Shiite villages west of Manama.

Al-Mouali said Ahmed died Saturday evening.

In a statement Sunday, Bahrain's Interior Ministry said Ahmed died of natural causes.

The demonstrations along the strategic highway has been going since Thursday. The Budaiya highway leads to a junction that is roughly half a kilometer (a quarter of a mile) south of Manama's Pearl Square, the former focus of Bahrain's Shiite uprisings.

Government forces evicted protesters from the Pearl Square in March and tore down the pearl sculpture that marked the site.

The now heavily guarded square holds great symbolic value for Bahrain's opposition movement, and protesters have repeatedly tried to retake it.

Smoking Linked to Skin Cancer in Women (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 15 (HealthDay News) -- If you're a woman who smokes and you are looking for another reason to quit, consider this: A new study has found a link between tobacco use and skin cancer.

The study found that women who had squamous cell skin cancer were more likely to have smoked than those who were free from the disease. And those who smoked at least 20 years were twice as likely to develop squamous cell skin cancer, a less aggressive form of skin cancer than melanoma.

Men who smoked had a modest risk for the two types of non-melanoma skin cancer -- basal cell and squamous cell cancer -- but the results weren't statistically significant, the study authors noted.

"We don't know why," said study lead author Dana Rollison, referring to the difference between women's and men's risk. Both men and women get a lot of exposure to the sun, the main risk factor for skin cancer, she noted.

But lung cancer research may offer a clue, said Rollison, an associate member in the Moffitt Cancer Center department of cancer epidemiology, in Tampa, Fla. Hormonal differences affecting the metabolization of nicotine and the body's ability to repair damage to lung DNA caused by smoking have been noted before, suggesting that the female hormone estrogen may play a role, she said.

The study, published online in the journal Cancer Causes Control, was done at the Moffitt Cancer Center and the University of South Florida, also in Tampa.

For the study, 383 patients with skin cancer were compared to 315 people without the disease. The participants were asked how much they smoked, when they picked up the habit and the total number of years they'd smoked. A total of 355 men and 343 women were included in the study. All were white, the group most at risk for skin cancer. Risks for both types of non-melanoma skin cancer were analyzed separately, compensating for the presence of other risk factors.

The researchers found that the more people smoked, the more likely they were to have skin cancer, Rollison said. Men who had basal cell skin cancer were significantly more likely to have smoked for at least 20 years than men with no cancer, the study authors noted.

While the study found an association between smoking and skin cancer risk, it did not prove a cause and effect.

Despite the elevated smoking-related risk among women, men overall are more likely to get skin cancer, Rollison noted. She said that "it is possible men's skin is more sensitive to sun exposure than women's."

But another skin cancer expert suggested that men may be less inclined to use sunscreen or other protection when outdoors.

"Although it could just be a genetic difference (between men and women), men tend to have more unprotected sun exposure in their lives," said Dr. Jeffrey Dover, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale University Medical School.

Dover said the study findings weren't surprising because "we know cigarette smoke contains carcinogens" and smokers are "blowing the smoke and ash around their faces all day."

The study is important, he added, because "although we have done well, we can do even better" at eliminating smoking as a cause of disease. "This adds more fuel to the idea that smoking has no place in our society."

Non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, where about 2 million cases are treated annually, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Squamous cell cancer occurs in the epidermis, the top layer of skin, and can spread to other organs. Basal cell skin cancer occurs in the dermis, the skin layer beneath the epidermis. While it does not spread to other organs, it is far more common than squamous cell cancer, according to the government agency.

Apple A5 processor produced at Samsung plant in (yup) Texas (Digital Trends)

Apple A5

Apple is well-known for manufacturing iPhones, iPods, iPads, and Macintosh computers overseas at manufacturers like Foxconn, and sourcing its components in bulk from a variety of manufacturers. But a new report from Reuters finds Apple is now starting to get the A5 microprocessor brains used in its iPad 2 and iPhone 4S from a new 1.6 million square foot facility in Texas. And that?s not the only surprise: the factory is owned by Samsung.

According to Reuters, the facility cost some $3.6 billion to build, and while the facility also produces flash memory, the plant was recently expanded to manufacture logic chips ? and almost all the logic chip production is for Apple?s A5 processor.

The move is interesting since it reflects a deepening of ties between Apple and Samsung at the same time the companies are engaged in a range of patent infringement and copyright lawsuits against each other around the world. Many of the suits center on Samsung???s Android-powered Galaxy Tab tablets and Galaxy smartphones, which Apple has accused of ???slavishly??

Historically, Apple has been one of Samsung?s biggest customers. Reports earlier this year had Apple committing to buy nearly $8 billion in components from Samsung and testing new processor manufacturing with Taiwan?s TMSC.?Just this week, new reports surfaced of Apple looking to purchase Israel-based flash memory maker Anobit, although that deal likely has more to do with flash memory technology than manufacturing capacity.

Samsung couldn?t be reached for comment. Apple declined to comment, save to note the company does not disclose information on its suppliers.

Test also differentiates between types and stages of lung cancer; study results for Metabolomx' colorimetric sensor array published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology

Mountain View, CA December 15, 2011 Metabolomx, a diagnostic company focused on the detection of the metabolomics signature of cancer from exhaled breath, today announces publication of results from the first clinical study demonstrating a breath test that can both detect lung cancer and differentiate between types of lung cancer in humans. This seminal study, conducted at the Cleveland Clinic and led by Dr. Peter Mazzone, used Metabolomx' first-generation colorimetric sensor array, and reported accuracy exceeding 80% in lung cancer detection, comparable to computerized tomography (CT) scan. Further, the study found that Metabolomx' first-generation colorimetric sensor array could identify the subtype of lung cancer (small cell versus adenocarcinoma versus squamous cell) with accuracy approaching 90%.

The availability of a low-cost, non-invasive metabolomic breath signature for lung cancer is particularly timely given the recently announced results of the National Cancer Institute's National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) calling for wider CT screening of high-risk citizens. The breath signature, which reports active tumor metabolism, is thought to provide complementary information to CT, potentially helping clinicians distinguish benign from malignant lung nodules.

The sensor detects the unique pattern of volatile organic compounds (the "metabolic biosignature") present in exhaled breath. The article, "Exhaled Breath Analysis with a Colorimetric Sensor Array for the Identification and Characterization of Lung Cancer," is appearing in the current, online issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO), the official Journal of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.

James R. Jett, MD, Pulmonary Medicine and Medical Oncology, National Jewish Health and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, stated, "The JTO is dedicated to publishing the best in clinical research that may one day make a real difference in the care of patients. The currently reported results, should they be confirmed in additional clinical testing, provide a provocative challenge for us to look more closely at 'biosignatures,' as described in the journal article, that may be complementary to detection modalities such as CT scan. The advent of the NLST results demonstrating the value of CT heightens the need for non-invasive, low-cost companion diagnostics, and a metabolomic breath test, if born out in continuing studies, is a candidate to play that role in early lung cancer detection."

"The Cleveland Clinic results just published by the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, the reference journal for lung cancer, demonstrate the broad potential for use of breath analysis in the early detection of lung cancer," commented Paul Rhodes, PhD, Founder and CEO of Metabolomx. "These results show that the first generation of our breath test technology compares well with CT scans. Detection of the metabolomic signature of lung cancer in exhaled breath is non-invasive, rapid, and inexpensive, and will become a valuable adjunct to help assess an indeterminate CT, and may come to have a central role in early detection and differentiation of lung cancer, while lowering costs to the healthcare system."

The article was authored by Peter J. Mazzone, MD, MPH, Cleveland Clinic; Xiao-Feng Wang, PhD, Cleveland Clinic; Yaomin Xu, PhD, Cleveland Clinic; Tarek Mekhail, MD, MSc, Florida Hospital; Mary C. Beukemann, Cleveland Clinic; Jie Na, MS, Cleveland Clinic; Jonathan W. Kemling, PhD, University of Illinois, Chicago; Kenneth S. Suslick, PhD, University of Illinois, Chicago; and Madhu Sasidhar, MD, Cleveland Clinic. Initial results from this study were presented at the American College of Chest Physicians conference in November 2010.

Dr. Mazzone commented, "Our research shows that breath testing may help identify patients with lung cancer, as well as provide us with information that can help with treatment decisions, such as the type of lung cancer, its stage, and prognosis. The accuracy of these non-invasive tests can be further augmented when combined with existing clinical predictors, such as health status and age."

Metabolomx has begun trials of its next-generation sensor array system in an ongoing lung cancer study at the Cleveland Clinic. The Company expects their current generation system to be over 100 times more sensitive at detecting breath chemicals, which are often present in very low concentrations, than the system used in the published study.

About the Study

The study, conducted at the Cleveland Clinic and led by Dr. Peter Mazzone, was designed to develop an exhaled breath biosignature of lung cancer using Metabolomx' colorimetric sensor array and to determine the accuracy of breath biosignatures of lung cancer characteristics with and without the inclusion of clinical risk factors. Breath samples were drawn from 229 individuals, 92 with biopsy-proven, untreated lung cancer and 137 either at a risk for developing lung cancer or with indeterminate lung nodules. Logistic prediction models were developed and statistically validated based on the color changes of the sensor. Age, sex, smoking history, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were incorporated in the prediction models.

Key Study Results

  • Approximately 81% accuracy for the detection of lung cancer without regard for subtype
  • Approximately 83%, 85%, and 89% accuracy in discriminating patients with adenocarcinoma, squamous cell, and small cell lung cancer versus controls, demonstrating that the breath test can differentiate lung cancer subtype - the first diagnostic announced to do so.
  • An ability to differentiate Stage I/II from Stage III/IV (approximately 79% accuracy) indicating the ability to identify lung cancer at the earliest stages.
