Son of Southwest Minn. State coach dies in car crash

MARSHALL, Minn. -- Brad Bigler, the men's basketball coach at Southwest Minnesota State University, was in critical condition Sunday after a two-vehicle crash in western Minnesota that killed his 5-month-old son and injured two other relatives.

Bigler, 33, was hospitalized in Sioux Falls, S.D., with several broken ribs and a broken shoulder blade, SMSU athletic director Chris Hmielewski said. Drake Phillip Bigler, the coach's young son, was killed in the crash.

"Obviously it's a tragedy when you lose a young family member," Hmielewski told the Independent of Marshall. "The thoughts and prayers of the entire Mustang family and everybody should go out to the Bigler family as they cope with this situation."

Bigler has been head coach of the SMSU men's basketball program for three years. The Mustangs finished 19-11 last season, winning the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament championship and making their third-ever appearance in the Division II tournament.

Bigler's wife, Heather Bigler, was driving in Pope County on Saturday evening when a truck driven by a 38-year-old Starbuck man crossed the center line and struck her vehicle, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

All four people in Bigler's vehicle were hurt. Heather Bigler suffered minor injuries, and her 74-year-old grandmother, Sharon Schuler of Granite Falls, was left in critical condition, authorities said.

The State Patrol said alcohol was detected in the Starbuck man's system, and is suspected as a factor in the crash.

State records show that the driver had been convicted of gross misdemeanor drunken driving in 2005 and for driving under the influence in 2000, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. In both cases, the man's blood-alcohol content was greater than 0.20, or 2? times the legal limit in Minnesota.

He also has convictions for reckless driving and speeding.

Before becoming head coach at the university in Marshall, Minn., Bigler previously served as an assistant coach at the school and played for the Mustangs for five seasons.

Hmielewski said the Bigler family sent him a text message early Sunday saying Brad Bigler's condition had improved overnight and that he was awake and coherent.

The crash marked the second tragedy for the Bigler family in just more than a year. Brad Bigler's mother, Diane Bigler-Hagenow, died last summer in a kayaking accident near Sacred Heart.

"We're going to surround the Bigler family with all the love and support they need, and we encourage everyone to do the same," Hmielewski said.

LONDON (AP) ? It's difficult enough to beat the U.S. women's gymnastics team these days. Now, the rest of the world will have to try and do it after the Americans are given a head start.

The reigning world champions and heavy gold-medal favorites will begin Sunday's team qualification on vault, their strongest event, where a busted big toe won't keep McKayla Maroney from doing her thing.

The 16-year-old will anchor the U.S. on their signature event despite aggravating a toe injury in practice during the run-up to the games.

"Vault is what I'm here for," Maroney said. "I knew I was going to do vault no matter what."

And nobody in the world does the difficult Amanar better than the dynamo from Long Beach, Calif., who rocketed to a world title in Tokyo last fall while helping the U.S. win the championship by a whopping four points.

The same is expected in London, where the U.S. will attempt to capture Olympic gold for the first time since the "Magnificent Seven" triumphed in Atlanta 16 years ago.

World all-around champion Jordyn Wieber, trials winner Gabby Douglas and team captain Aly Raisman will do all four events for the U.S., with Kyla Ross replacing Maroney on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

By the time Maroney's day is over, the U.S. could have a pretty healthy lead. Vault produces the highest scores in competition, and no other country can match the U.S. Amanar for Amanar.

The vault ? named after 1996 vault champion Simona Amanar ? is arguably the most difficult being done in competition and is worth an extra 0.7 just for even attempting it. If the U.S. gets them off cleanly, they'll put the rest of the 12-team field in a hole that will be tough to overcome.

As if sending a message of their dominance, the U.S. ripped off a series of Amanars during podium training, resembling a pink-clad assembly line.

Barring catastrophe akin to a reverse "Miracle On Ice," the U.S. will be one of the eight teams to advance to Tuesday night's finals.

Each team enters four athletes per event during qualifying, with the three best scores counting.

The top eight teams at the end of the night make the finals on Tuesday, which moves to the "three-up, three-count" format.

The stiffest test for the U.S. is expected to come from defending Olympic champion China, Russia and a resurgent Romanian squad that won the European championships handily this spring.

Still, there's little doubt the U.S. is the team to catch, particularly with Maroney in the lineup.

Eyebrows were raised just before the games when she was held out for much of training, spending time behind a small protective wall with her feet hidden from view.

Turns out she'd accidentally kicked a beam during practice shortly after the U.S. arrived in London, causing her big toe, which she broke at a competition in Chicago in May, to start throbbing again.

The only real treatment is time off. She won't get any until after the games and will grit her way through the vault with her big toe and second toe taped together.

After she's done with her two trips down the runway, Maroney will get a close-up view of the budding rivalry between Wieber and Douglas.

Wieber has steamrolled the competition for the past three years but was upended by the sprightly Douglas at trials. Both have stressed they're focused on the team gold, but the qualification round will mark the start of what could be a gripping week in which the U.S. tries to repeat the 1-2 all-around finish produced four years ago by Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson.

If Douglas or Wieber falters, Raisman is more than capable of bumping one out of the all-around. The top 24 individual finishers move on to the finals Thursday, but Olympic rules allow only two athletes from any country to advance, meaning at least one of the three Americans will watch from the stands in a sweatsuit.

It's that kind of depth that has made the U.S. a prohibitive favorite. Wieber, Douglas, Maroney and Raisman were all part of the world championship team that crushed the field in Tokyo. The 15-year-old Ross has fit right in, her elegant lines a marked contrast in style to some of her more muscled teammates.

Ross has hardly been intimidated by the stage, soaring at trials last month to finish second on bars behind Douglas. She was sharp in training on Friday, earning praise from team coordinator Martha Karolyi after a series of no-wobble beam routines.

A repeat performance Sunday should set the stage for the biggest night in U.S. gymnastics this millennium.

I?ve traded off my reasons for not blogging much of late. Last week and before it was The Particle at the End of the Universe (in stores November 13!), but that?s now been handed in and I can kick back and catch up on my martini-drinking. Except that instead of doing that, I instantly hopped on a plane for Europe, where I?m now participating in a workshop on philosophy and cosmology. Not that you should feel sorry for me ? the workshop is being held at the La Pietra conference center, a beautiful facility owned by NYU in Florence. I?m not sure why NYU owns a conference center in Florence; it could have been a targeted purchase, but it could easily have just been a gift. (Caltech for a while owned an abandoned gold mine. Universities get all sorts of crazy gifts.) But at least temporarily, martinis have been put aside for Chianti and limoncello.

And work, of course. This is my favorite kind of workshop: less than twenty people, gathered around a table, with no fixed agenda, talking about issues of mutual interest as they come up. This group has both scientists and philosophers, although probably more of the latter. So far each day has featured a scientist ? Joel Primack, me, Brian Greene, Scott Aaronson ? giving some very general remarks, while everyone else takes turns whacking them with (metaphorical) sticks. My own talk started at 11 a.m. and didn?t finish until 5:30 p.m., with breaks for lunch and coffee. So it?s exhausting both intellectually and physically, but very rewarding to have the chance to dig very deeply into difficult issues.

My talk was about ? you guessed it ? the arrow of time. Most people in the room are already familiar with the basic story that time?s arrow is (at least mostly) a consequence of the increase of entropy over time, and that our current universe has low entropy, but the entropy was even much lower in the past, and that last fact demands cosmological explanation. The central question concerned what would count as an ?explanation.?

One idea might be that whenever you have a simple true statement that has enormously powerful consequence for many different facts about the universe, that statement would qualify as a ?law of nature.? Often we think of such laws as patterns that apply individually to each subset of the universe, but one could argue that the statement ?the early universe was in a low-entropy state of the kind that would naturally evolve into the universe we see? should also count as a law. If you buy into that, then one shouldn?t necessarily look for a deeper explanation of that fact; maybe that?s just how the universe is.

I think that?s an allowed position, but certainly not the most attractive from the point of view of most cosmologists. We tend to look at the low entropy of the early universe as a clue in our search for a better theory than the one we currently have.

From that perspective, what would count as having explained the low-entropy state? My argument was the following: imagine you have a certain theory of everything, consisting of a space of states (Hilbert space or whatever) and a dynamical evolution law. And imagine that, for almost all solutions to the equations of motion, some certain fact X about the system turn out to be associated with another fact Y almost all the time. (Fact X = our entropy is low, fact Y = it was even lower in the past.) Then, if we do indeed observe that fact X and fact Y are both true, then fact Y is ?explained? by this theory. You might still want to explain fact X, but that?s a harder question that I didn?t get into. It?s enough of a challenge to explain the lower-entropy past even if you accept as given the current low-entropy state. (And of course we?re imagining that we have well-defined theories with this feature, which at the moment we really don?t, although there are some rough ideas.)

I won?t claim that I convinced anyone who didn?t already agree, but I do think that there is more mutual understanding now than when we began. And the Chianti has been quite good.

There was a time about a decade ago when India was known as BPO Nation and the call-centre capital of the world. Fresh Indian school and college graduates with aliases and trained accents handled customer-service calls from irate Westerners. They remotely marketed goods and services, and cajoled tardy customers into paying their bills.

Today, the glory days are behind the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry. Neighbouring Philippines has overtaken India as the world?s largest call-centre hub. Growth in the BPO services sector is easing off and a talent shortage is squeezing companies. Industry executives are saying India?s BPO sector is in need of an urgent makeover.

The BPO industry has long been eclipsed by its big brother, India?s IT industry, says Shanmugham ?Nags? Nagarajan, co-founder and chief people officer of [24]7 Inc, a technology-led BPO with sizable operations in India. For a long time the BPO sector was referred to as ITES, or IT-enabled services, a name that conveyed an inferior position compared with the much-feted IT industry.

The lack of a distinct identity and its accompanying status has hurt it in many ways, says Nagarajan. ?The government has stopped nurturing the fledgling BPO industry, though it is only half as old as the IT industry,? he says.

The industry?s problems run deep. For a long time, call-centre jobs have been seen as low-paying, dead-end career options. Yet in fact call-centre companies have brought well-paid global jobs and a world-class working environment to a country that has people with widely varying levels of education, aptitude and English skills.

The dilemma for the industry seems to be about imagining its future afresh. It is an identity crisis.

Individual BPO companies, especially the bigger ones, have moved rapidly up the value chain and are doing a good job of restructuring and rebranding themselves. [24]7 Inc for instance has gone through a recent name change - it was formerly 24/7Customer - and describes itself as a technology-led BPO.

Many companies have evolved from pure-play, voice-based services to high-value, sophisticated offerings. But the industry?s image has not reflected this change, says Mohit Thukral, vice president and global operations head at leading BPO company Genpact. At Genpact, for example, revenues from voice-based services have shrunk to 20 per cent of its total.

Over the past five years, India has slowly transformed itself into a mature BPO destination in terms of experience and capabilities, providing the widest spectrum of services across industries and domains. However, a talent deficiency has frustrated overall growth. The sector has struggled with the social positioning of the BPO employee, a challenge that the IT industry never faced.

More than anything, there is a pressing need to change industry perceptions in the talent market in India, says Rohit Kapoor, vice chairman and CEO of EXL Service, another leading BPO player. The repositioning would help attract high-level talent to newer BPO verticals such as accounting, analytics, under-writing, medical, taxation and legal fields.

To improve the talent pipeline, a potential worker?s elderly relatives or extended family will need to see that BPO is not only about night shifts and customer service calls but also about varied roles in specialised fields. By rebranding, the industry is hoping that these changes can be conveyed to potential employees and their families.

Bigger BPO firms such as WNS, Genpact and EXL Service are prevailing on IT industry trade body Nasscom to work on the repositioning.

While these efforts continue, other smaller industry companies are bitter that in their view Nasscom has done little to address the many challenges facing the BPO sector, including visas and taxation. There are murmurs that it is time to break away from the high-profile Nasscom and the wider IT industry and set up a separate, parallel lobby group.

In India there is now a divide in what was once an industry united under the label of outsourcing.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Sandy Weill is having a change of heart.

Weill, the aggressive dealmaker who built Citigroup on the idea that in banking, bigger is better, said Wednesday that he believes big banks should be broken up.

Speaking on CNBC's "Squawk Box," the 79-year-old Weill appeared to shock the show's anchors when he said that consumer banking units should be split from riskier investment banking units.

That would mean dismembering Citigroup as well as other big U.S. banks, like JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America.

It's an idea that's traditionally more in line with the banking industry's harshest critics, not its founding fathers. It's an ironic twist coming from an empire-builder who nursed Citigroup into a behemoth. And it's directly opposed to the stance of the industry's current leaders, like JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon, who have been trying to convince regulators and lawmakers of just the opposite, that big banks do not need to be split.

Weill said the radical change is necessary if U.S. banks want to rebuild trust and remain on top of the world's financial system. Weill also criticized banks for taking on too much debt and not providing enough disclosure about what's on their balance sheets.

"Our world hates bankers," he said.

Big banks have been villainized in the financial crisis and its aftermath. Critics blame them for risky trading that created a housing bubble and eventually led to global economic upheaval. In some circles, there's still resentment that the government used taxpayer money to give bailout loans to the biggest banks, including Citigroup, because regulators believed that the financial system wouldn't be able to handle their failure.

But standalone investment banks, Weill said, wouldn't take deposits, so they wouldn't be bailed out. Banks that have both investment banking and consumer banking say it's necessary to keep them together because they balance each other, ensuring stability no matter the economy.

Investment banking, which offers services like trading stocks and packaging loans into securities, can be spectacularly profitable in the good times and spectacularly unprofitable in the bad. Consumer banking, the plain-vanilla business of making loans and accepting deposits, generally offers a steadier, if slower, way to make profits.

Until the late '90s, the Glass-Steagall Act largely kept consumer banks and investment banks separate. Glass-Steagall was created during the Great Depression. The separation rules were repealed in 1999.

Weill's professed conversion set off a flurry of reactions. The banking industry's critics hailed it as proof that the biggest banks should be split. "Sanford Weill is one of many banking industry experts who have observed that too big to fail is often too big to manage," Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said in a statement.

Others were unimpressed.

Joshua Brown, a New York investment adviser who writes the blog "The Reformed Broker," called Weill "the original architect of Too Big To Fail" banking and noted that Weill didn't apologize "for the Citigroup he built or its imitators."

"Perhaps this is about burnishing his legacy," Brown wrote.

Weill said he hadn't talked to JPMorgan's Dimon or Vikram Pandit, Citigroup's current CEO, about his new stance. Dimon was Weill's protege before getting ousted in a power struggle in the late '90s. Pandit took over at Citigroup after Weill's friend, Chuck Prince, lost the job.

Asked what he thought their reaction would be, Weill replied, "I don't know. You'll find out."

A Citigroup spokeswoman declined to comment. A JPMorgan spokesman didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

In the same interview, Weill showed his fondness for the industry. He credited mega-banks for providing capital markets that helped convert communist countries to capitalism, and moved poor people into the middle class.

"It is really sad what is happening, and it's sad for young people," he said. "This was an industry that attracted a lot of really terrific people."

Weill retired as CEO of Citigroup in 2003 but remained chairman until 2006, building it into a giant that offered both consumer and investment banking.

Asked about his about-face, Weill said he had been getting his thoughts together over the past year.

"I think the world changes," he said, "and the world that we live in is different than the one that we lived in 10 years ago."

UCLA researchers have developed a new transparent solar cell that is an advance toward giving windows in homes and other buildings the ability to generate electricity while still allowing people to see outside. Their study appears in the journal ACS Nano.

The UCLA team describes a new kind of polymer solar cell (PSC) that produces energy by absorbing mainly infrared light, not visible light, making the cells nearly 70% transparent to the human eye. They made the device from a photoactive plastic that converts infrared light into an electrical current.

"These results open the potential for visibly transparent polymer solar cells as add-on components of portable electronics, smart windows and building-integrated photovoltaics and in other applications," said study leader Yang Yang, a UCLA professor of materials science and engineering, who also is director of the Nano Renewable Energy Center at California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI).

Yang added that there has been intense world-wide interest in so-called polymer solar cells. "Our new PSCs are made from plastic-like materials and are lightweight and flexible," he said. "More importantly, they can be produced in high volume at low cost."

Polymer solar cells have attracted great attention due to their advantages over competing solar cell technologies. Scientists have also been intensely investigating PSCs for their potential in making unique advances for broader applications. Several such applications would be enabled by high-performance visibly transparent photovoltaic (PV) devices, including building-integrated photovoltaics and integrated PV chargers for portable electronics.

Previously, many attempts have been made toward demonstrating visibly transparent or semitransparent PSCs. However, these demonstrations often result in low visible light transparency and/or low device efficiency because suitable polymeric PV materials and efficient transparent conductors were not well deployed in device design and fabrication.

A team of UCLA researchers from the California NanoSystems Institute, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and UCLA's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have demonstrated high-performance, solution-processed, visibly transparent polymer solar cells through the incorporation of near-infrared light-sensitive polymer and using silver nanowire composite films as the top transparent electrode. The near-infrared photoactive polymer absorbs more near-infrared light but is less sensitive to visible light, balancing solar cell performance and transparency in the visible wavelength region.

Another breakthrough is the transparent conductor made of a mixture of silver nanowire and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, which was able to replace the opaque metal electrode used in the past. This composite electrode also allows the solar cells to be fabricated economically by solution processing. With this combination, 4% power-conversion efficiency for solution-processed and visibly transparent polymer solar cells has been achieved.

"We are excited by this new invention on transparent solar cells, which applied our recent advances in transparent conducting windows (also published in ACS Nano) to fabricate these devices," said Paul S.Weiss, CNSI director and Fred Kavli Chair in NanoSystems Sciences.
