Common Core State Standards: Consistency in classroom should ...

By KATIE JUSTICE

Parents and students throughout Georgia may notice a slight change in the curriculum beginning this fall.

Georgia, along with 47 other states, developed a set of core standards for K-12 students in English language arts and mathematics. The purpose of these standards is to establish a uniform curriculum across the country that would better prepare students for life after high school.

The effort to move to Common Core State Performance Standards was state-led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers with the assistance of Achieve, ACT and the College Board. They were adopted by the Georgia State Board of Education in July 2010, and Georgia educators have been training on the standards since March of 2011.

The Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, or CCGPS, are being implemented in classrooms this fall, however, parents and students should not expect a big change in curriculum.

?In Georgia for the past several years, we?ve had Georgia Performance Standards which are similar to Common Core so it?s not as big as a change as in some states that haven?t had standards in place,? said Matt Cardoza, director of communications for the Georgia Department of Education.

Georgia Performance Standards came into use in 2004 and were established to provide clear expectations for assessment, instruction and student work.

Cardoza said that some learning standards have shifted from one grade level to another, but the most noticeable change is there will be more indepth focus into topics. Students will be required to do more critical thinking and analysis.

Some examples of changes in curriculum will be the Pythagorean Theorem being taught in eighth grade instead of ninth, and fourth graders now learning to add and subtract fractions, which was previously taught in fifth grade.

Parents and students expect changes in the rigorousness of the curriculum, according to Jackson County School System officials. April Howard is the Director of Elementary Support and Rise Hawley is the Director of Secondary Support.

In English language arts, the common core standards are broken down into the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening and language. In reading, the common core standards will focus on comprehension and ensuring students gain more from what they read. Students? writings will focus on several different types of writing including argumentative and informative pieces, narrative works and research projects. The area of speaking and listening will emphasize effective communication practices. Lastly, the focus of language will be in writing and speaking, as well as advancing students? vocabularies.

The other subject area of the CCGPS is mathematics which is broken down into conceptual development, fluency with core skills and meaningful learning.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will build their foundation of numbers and mathematical operations, which includes fractions and decimals.

Those in grades sixth through eighth will begin learning algebra, geometry, probabilities and statistics.

High school students will focus on the practical application of mathematics, such as is done by college students or those with a career.

?You have to look at skills necessary to be successful after high school. These are critical skills to being successful after high school, whether a student goes to college or gets a job,? said Cardoza.

Another change as part of CCGPS will be the phasing out of the High School Graduation Tests. Instead, students must pass all required courses and End of Course Tests (EOCTs) will count for 20 percent of a student?s final grade.

?We are excited about the phasing out of the GHSGT. Our students traditionally perform better on the EOCT which is an assessment that they take immediately upon completion of the course. In contrast, the GHSGT has been given in the junior year and is cumulative in that it covers content students have studied in grades 9-11,? said Chanda Palmer, Assistant Principal for Instruction at East Jackson Comprehensive High School..

Beginning next fall, incoming high school freshman will choose a career pathway. There will be 17 possible career pathways including Agriculture, Finance, Health Science and Public Safety.

?This will help them see more relevance between what they are learning in high school to what they will see in college or future career,? said Cardoza.

In addition to preparing students for life after high school, the Common Core State Standards will make it easier for students moving from one school to another, even if that move is across the country.

According to Cardoza, a student should be able to recognize the same learning standards no matter where they attend school, as long as they are within a state practicing the common core standards.

?It?s going to increase the rigor in class, and it?s going to increase what a student is able to produce. Focus on literacy is a good thing,? said Hawley.

Bj?rn Hurri (update) - Lines and Colors

Bjorn Hurri
Bj?rn Hurri is a concept artist working in the gaming industry, He has worked for companies like NCsoft, Catalyst Game Labs and SEGA and is currently the Lead Artist for Opus Artz, a production design agency based in London.

When I wrote about his work back in 2008, I highlighted his fun and, at the time, lightly sketched illustrations for steam punk versions of characters from Star Wars.

Since then, Hurri has expanded the project into a longer series of more finished illustrations (image above, top), with more elaborate interpretations of the characters.

His other work for gaming projects ranges from historical through science fiction subjects, and frequently displays Hurri?s skill at conveying texture and atmosphere.

I particularly enjoy his playful take on John Bauer?s wonderful big-nosed trolls (above, bottom).

Though his website is currently unavailable, you can find a portfolio of his work, along with some relevant information about the artist, on CGHub.

Hurri is also a contributor to the Gorilla Artfare group blog.

Romney considering trip to battered Gulf Coast

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told veterans Wednesday that he'll make finding jobs for them a priority as he accused Democratic President Barack Obama of weakening the nation's defenses.

Invoking the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks ? referring to "a plume of smoke on a clear blue morning" ? Romney said protecting the country is the president's highest duty as he worked to pitch himself as a potential commander in chief. He told veterans meeting in Indiana that he's already started planning how to change veterans' services to help them during a Romney administration.

"I'm going to make reforming that agency a personal priority," Romney said, ticking through a series of policy promises. He said he would allow GI Bill beneficiaries to attend any public school at in-state tuition rates, encourage states to create a common system to recognize credentials veterans have earned through military training, and allow veterans to seek care from the active duty military's TRICARE health system if they can't get timely health services from the VA.

Romney criticized the series of automatic defense cuts that will begin in January 2013 unless Congress acts to stop it. His vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, voted to approve the legislation that authorized those cuts alongside reductions in domestic spending.

The American Legion speech in Indiana gave Romney an opportunity to assail his Democratic opponent far from where others have focused more on the candidate's biography in order to sell the Republican nominee to the American people. In Tampa, Fla., speakers at the Republican National Convention ? including 2008 presidential nominee John McCain and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ? planned to highlight Romney's foreign policy credentials.

Obama, campaigning in Virginia, accused his opponent of offering words but no action. "He likes to talk tough but he doesn't have a lot of details when it comes to these critical issues," the president said. "And so what I have said not just to you but most importantly to those young men and women in uniform who are serving us every day is that you will know where I stand."

Romney's foreign and defense experience is limited to several trips abroad as a private businessman and commanding the Massachusetts National Guard. During a trip abroad last month, Romney drew criticism for his remarks about Olympic security and how culture affected the Israeli and Palestinian economies.

In the address, the Republican nominee highlighted why defense and foreign policy experience can be so critical.

"You and I know that our debates can change suddenly, with a ringing phone in the dead of night, or a grim-faced reporter in the middle of the day. Or a plume of smoke on a clear blue morning," Romney said.

He began his remarks to the American Legion by acknowledging the tropical storm churning over the Gulf Coast, flooding communities in Louisiana and threatening lives.

"I appreciate this invitation to join you on dry land this afternoon," Romney joked as he opened his remarks. "Our thoughts are of course with the people of the Gulf Coast states. Seven years ago today, they were bracing for Hurricane Katrina."

Behind the scenes, GOP officials said Romney and his team were considering a visit to the hurricane strike zone. They said there were no current plans to change Romney's convention schedule and that no decisions had been made about a potential visit.

With rain beating down on New Orleans and flooding intensifying, eyes are turning to the battered Gulf Coast. Romney's campaign has been keeping in touch with governors in the region, particularly Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Campaign officials have also been in contact with the American Red Cross and the National Weather Service.

The storm is diverting attention from the festivities in Tampa, where Republicans officially nominated Romney for president on Tuesday. Romney officials and convention organizers have been holding conference calls about the weather every few hours for the past several days as they consider whether or how to change plans.

Romney had initially planned to appear in the convention hall via video from Indiana, speaking to attendees in conjunction with McCain. The campaign scrapped that plan Wednesday and Romney will instead return to Tampa. Officials wouldn't say if he planned to appear in person with McCain at the convention.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic welcome a baby boy

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Bill Rancic announced the birth of his and Giuliana Rancic's first child, Edward Duke, early Thursday morning.?

"The 'Duke' has landed!" tweeted Bill. "Edward Duke Rancic was welcomed into the world last night at 7lbs 4oz. G & I feel blessed beyond words...We did it!"

E! reported that the four-hour labor went smoothly, and that both Bill and Giuliana were in the delivery room for the birth?via a gestational surrogate hired by the Rancics. Bill cut the umbilical cord, and Giuliana was the first to hold the baby, then passed him over to her husband. They both fed little Edward, and told E! that the child was doing well and already had been bathed for the first time.?

"Bill and I are blessed beyond words to welcome Edward into our lives," Giuliana told E! "Thank you so much to everyone who supported us along the way. We are so in love with the little guy already!"

It was a long road for the Rancics, who shared their journey on TODAY in multiple appearances. Last year, they shared Giuliana's fight with infertility and the breast cancer that was discovered while she was in treatment, then returned in April to explain how they would use a gestational surrogate to bring their child into the world.

Giuliana was true to her word, promising back in June that she wouldn't give their upcoming baby boy any "Hollywood-type, weird name that people can't pronounce."

As for whether little Ed Duke will appear on their Style network reality show "Giuliana & Bill," fans will just have to wait and see.?"We've thought about that," she told E! in June. "It's definitely come up in conversation, and it's this sort of thing where I think we just need to have the baby first and then figure out is this going to work or not."

Congrats to the new parents!

TUESDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDay News) -- For patients with previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer who are refractory or intolerant to standard therapies, treatment with a novel oral nucleoside antitumor agent, TAS-102, is tolerable and shows promising efficacy, according to a phase 2 study published online Aug. 28 in The Lancet Oncology.

Takayuki Yoshino, M.D., from the National Cancer Center Hospital East in Chiba, Japan, and colleagues assessed the efficacy and safety of TAS-102 for patients with confirmed colorectal adenocarcinoma who had a treatment history of two or more regimens of standard chemotherapy and were refractory or intolerant to fluoropyrimidine, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin. A total of 112 patients (aged 20 or older) were randomly assigned to receive TAS-102, and 57 patients were assigned to placebo. Patients were followed for a median of 11.3 months.

The researchers found that the median overall survival was significantly longer in the TAS-102 group compared with the placebo group (9.0 versus 6.6 months; hazard ratio, 0.56). In the safety population, 50 percent of TAS-102-treated patients had neutropenia of grade 3 or 4, 28 percent had leukopenia, and 17 percent had anemia. None of the placebo-treated patients had grade 3 or worse neutropenia or leukopenia; 5 percent had grade 3 or worse anemia. Serious adverse events occurred in 19 percent of the TAS-102-treated and 9 percent of placebo-treated patients. There were no treatment-related deaths.

"In conclusion, TAS-102 has promising efficacy with a manageable safety profile in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who are refractory or intolerant to standard chemotherapy," the authors write.

Several authors disclosed financial ties to pharmaceutical companies, including Taiho Pharmaceuticals, which funded the study and manufactures TAS-102.

2 Chinese ships hit by typhoon; 5 dead, 10 missing

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon pounded South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain Tuesday as it churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks, killing at least five fishermen and forcing the coast guard to perform a daring rescue for the survivors.

Rescuers saved 12 fishermen and were still searching for 10 missing from the Chinese ships that hit rocks off South Korea's southern Jeju island.

Separately, at least three other people died as Typhoon Bolaven knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of South Koreans, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.

North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, was next in the typhoon's path. State media reported the country was being lashed by heavy rain and strong wind Tuesday.

Off Jeju island, dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the Chinese fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.

Eighteen fishermen survived. Twelve were rescued by the coast guard and the others swam or were washed ashore.

South Korea issued a storm warning for the capital, Seoul, as Bolaven battered the country's south and west, knocking over street lights and church spires and ripping signs from stores. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop where she kept dried red peppers and a third person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials.

Strong wind gusts left Seoul streets covered with leaves, garbage and branches. More than 15,000 schools cancelled classes, and businesses and homes taped windows or pasted the glass with wet newspapers to keep them from shattering.

More than 330,000 South Korean households lost power, the government said, and more than 70 were left homeless because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled.

In North Korea, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency reported gale force winds and heavy rain in many parts of the country. Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure.

North Korea is still trying to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.

Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks. Seoul's Unification Ministry approved a trip Wednesday by two South Korean aid groups to visit the North Korean city of Kaesong for talks on flood aid.

Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.

The typhoon hit the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Monday, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea. More than 75,000 households lost power.

Farther south, another typhoon, Tembin, doubled back and hit Taiwan three days after drenching the same region before blowing out to sea. Fierce winds and rain toppled coconut trees in the beach resort town of Hengchun.

In Manila, the Philippine weather agency reissued typhoon warnings to residents and fishermen for Tembin, which blew out of the archipelago over the weekend. Fishing boats in the north were urged not to venture out to sea while larger ships were warned of possible big waves and heavy rains.

Video: The twisted paper robots are coming

20 hrs.

Those who worry our fascination with ever-more sophisticated robots will certainly spell our doom may find relief that some of our most brilliant minds are focusing their creative energy on robots made entirely out of paper and wooden dowels. Its power source is a twisted up rubber band.

The video above showing the intricate process to build of the biped paper robot is making the rounds on the Internet.?It?is worth a view for anyone who ever folded up a piece of paper and sent it haphazardly soaring across a classroom.

While you may not think such robots are much of a threat to the start-of-the automatons fabricated out of cutting edge lightweight alloys, high-tech circuitry and super-sophisticated algorithms, the paper robot can be outfitted with a rubber-band powered Gatling gun, as demonstrated in the clip below.

NASA to Broadcast 1st Song from Mars Tuesday

A song called "Reach for the Stars" will make its debut, appropriately, from space.

NASA plans to broadcast the tune, written by rapper and songwriter will.i.am, from its Curiosity rover, newly landed on the surface of Mars.

Though Curiosity has no speakers, it will transmit the song via radio waves back to Earth to be received at 1 p.m. PDT (4 p.m. EDT) Tuesday, Aug. 28 during an educational event at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.?

"Members of the team that successfully landed the rover on Mars earlier this month will explain to students the mission and the technology behind the song's interplanetary transmission," NASA officials wrote in a statement. "will.i.am will then premiere 'Reach for the Stars,' a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration.?

During the event, NASA scientists and mission managers will talk about the Curiosity mission and explain the technology behind the broadcast to students. It won't be the first broadcast from space?NASA used the Mars rover to broadcast a spoken message from the space agency's chief, Charles Bolden, today (Aug. 17).

The musician will.i.am, a member of hip-hop group The Black-Eyed Peas, was onsite at JPL Aug. 5 (PDT) to watch Curiosity land on Mars. The car-size, $2.5 billion rover is beginning a two-year mission to investigate whether Mars ever had the conditions necessary to support microbial life.

Blogging for Your Online Business Internet Entrepreneurship skills ...

bloggingTo grow your online business in different ways, all that you need is a little bit of time, effort, and determination.

One of the most effective ways to reduce the promotional costs for your online business is through blogging. If you have no experience with blogging, it may seem like nothing more than a way for individuals to share their thoughts online. In a way, this is correct, but you can use this medium to promote online businesses as well.

A blog is a way for you to share your ideas and opinions, while also serving as a front for your business.

For those who are more literal-minded, a business-centered blog will be the best avenue to explore. A business blog can be focused more on the business world itself, containing posts that are related to how to sell items online or specific products and services. With the use of a business blog, you can share information that you have gathered related to your specific sector. With the expertise that you can gain from researching and writing these posts, you will attract readers who turn to your blog for business insight. As a result, they will start to develop a relationship with your business at the same time.

One of the biggest advantages of using blogs as promotional tools is that they can be as simple as you wish to make them. It?s easy to start a blog and access templates to create the format you are most comfortable in. You can use basic tools such as WordPress, which not only hosts your blog for free but also gives you access to numerous content management features through it dashboard. If you?re already using an ecommerce platform for your business, you may find that you can also host a blog through this same software. This can be ideal, because you can update your blog and business website at the same time.

Once your blog is up and running, it?s helpful to use tools like Google Analytics to keep track of who is visiting your site, and PollDaddy to set up interactive polls to engage your audience. Those who are running an ecommerce business will want to incorporate information in the blog that pertains to their particular business sector. This could include sneak previews of the newest products in your industry, relevant news items and links, and even personal posts to humanize your brand and show off your personality. The key is to make your posts entertaining and informative enough that you will build and retain a readership.

With this strong readership, you will then be able to use your blog as a way to expose your audience to the products or services that your business offers. By placing links to your products in the blog, you?ll be able to increase the traffic to your business website, and build relationships with your customers at the same time. A blog is a great way to start creating a substantial web presence for your brand. You can do this even before your ecommerce website is ready, at little to no cost.

Affiliate Revenue-How to Create an Affiliate Marketing Business ...

Cashing in on affiliate revenue opportunities is simply a matter, in essence, of being a sales agent for someone else. Here?s a simple example of how the whole process works. Let?s say, for example, that you?re a craft person and you have a web site where you sell quilts. Your web site is essentially an online catalog containing page after page for various quilts that you and your friends create. In addition to selling quilts you have an opportunity to cash in on affiliate revenue.

The first thing you do is to identify other possible products that the people that visit your site might be interested in. Let?s say that you decide that people interested in quilts might also be interested in quilt making and collectibles. Great!

Now you do a little research. You start by going to somewhere like http://www.associateprograms.com to research that has an affiliate revenue program for collectibles. There you discover that the Franklin Mint, a well-known supplier of collectibles has an affiliate program. You browse their terms and decide you want to enroll in their affiliate revenue program. One of your friends tells you about Amazon.com?s affiliate program too so you quickly research that and decide that cross-selling books (about quilt making and collecting) might make good sense.

Following up with Franklin Mint?s and Amazon?s affiliate programs will then result in your adding specialized links to your website so that when various products of yours are displayed, cross-sell items are displayed or pitched from the Franklin Mint or Amazon. If one of your visitors purchases something through the Amazon.com or Franklin Mint links ? you earn a commission!

That?s all there is to it. Study your market, identify the appropriate affiliates, link up and reap the affiliate revenue benefits.

Spanish police arrest 5 for 'Robin Hood' heist

MADRID (AP) ? Spanish police say they have arrested five left-wing union activists for their alleged role in a "Robin Hood"-style looting of a supermarket made to highlight the plight of people suffering through the country's recession.

The southern Andalusian Workers' Union made news Tuesday when a handful of its activists made off with nine trolleys full of food from a supermarket in the southern town of Ecija and left without paying. They later handed the food to poor unemployed people.

A police statement said one person was arrested during an eviction Friday of members of the union who were squatting on Defense Ministry land to protest its abandonment and demanding it be handed over to hard-pressed farmers.

Two others were arrested elsewhere Friday, and two Thursday.

Gu Kailai blames 'mental breakdown' for murder: Xinhua

The wife of a Chinese former top politician at the heart of a scandal that has rocked the ruling Communist Party has admitted murdering a British businessman and blamed her actions on a "mental breakdown", state media reported Friday.

Xinhua news agency said Gu Kailai told her murder trial that she suffered the breakdown after "learning that my son was in jeopardy", in a report released the day four Chinese police officers reportedly confessed to covering up the killing of Neil Heywood.

Gu, who is accused of poisoning the 41-year-old businessman with cyanide in a hotel room last November when he was drunk, said she would "accept and calmly face any sentence" handed down by the court, Xinhua said.

She also said she would "shoulder responsibility" for losses to her party and country, it added.

In a statement to the court at the end of the one-day hearing on Thursday, the wife of disgraced former Chongqing Party secretary Bo Xilai said she accepted all the facts in the indictment, Xinhua added.

She told the court the case had been "like a huge stone weighing on me for more than half a year".

"During those days last November, I suffered a mental breakdown after learning that my son was in jeopardy," she said, referring to Bo Guagua who is believed to have had a dispute with Heywood over money.

"The tragedy which was created by me was not only extended to Neil, but also to several families.

"The case has produced great losses to the Party and the country, for which I ought to shoulder the responsibility, and I will never feel at ease. I am grateful to the humanitarian care shown to me by those who handled the case.

"I solemnly tell the court that in order to maintain the dignity of the law, I will accept and calmly face any sentence and I also expect a fair and just court decision."

In her testimony Gu reportedly said: "It was in about 2005 when my son was studying in Britain that Neil Heywood wrote us a letter of self-introduction, showing his intent to get to know us."

She said that her son and Heywood got into a "dispute" over a "land project" that "never got started".

The dispute then escalated. "To me, that was more than a threat. It was real action that was taking place. I must fight to my death to stop the craziness of Neil Heywood," Xinhua reported Gu as saying.

Xinhau said that a panel asked to assess Gu's mental state had concluded that she had been treated for "chronic insomnia, anxiety and depression, and paranoia in the past".

It had found that she used to take antidepressants and had "developed a certain degree of physical and psychological dependence on sedative hypnotic drugs, which resulted in mental disorders", Xinhua added.

However, the experts said Gu "had a clear goal and a practical motive in committing the alleged crime" and "should be identified as having the capacity to accept full criminal responsibility".

Xinhua added that Zhang Xiaojun, Gu's co-defendant, had confessed his involvement in the murder and wanted to say "sorry" to the victim's relatives.

Gu's government-appointed lawyer did not challenge the charge that she poisoned Heywood after going to drink with him in the hotel room where he was found dead, court official Tang Yigan told journalists after Thursday's hearing.

The verdict will be delivered at a later date -- possibly days or weeks away.

On Friday four policemen admitted to covering up the killing to protect Gu, an official said.

All four were senior police officials in Chongqing, the southwestern megacity that Bo ran until he was sacked in March, and where Heywood's body was discovered.

Tang, the official with the Hefei Intermediate Court in eastern China, told reporters their one-day trial had ended late Friday and that a verdict would be issued at a later date.

"The defendants admitted that the charge of bending the law for selfish ends was basically correct," he said of the four, named as Guo Weiguo, Li Yang, Wang Pengfei and Wang Zhi.

The court heard how the officers covered up Gu's involvement in Heywood's death by "forging interview scripts and hiding evidence," agreeing to say he died of excessive alcohol consumption.

It is not clear whether Bo, who was one of China's most senior leaders until his downfall earlier this year, knew about the alleged cover-up, although the hearing was being closely watched for any hints on his likely fate.

Experts say the process has been carefully stage-managed to minimise embarrassment to China's communist rulers after the scandal, which ended her husband's career and exposed divisions in the party.

The party is keen to resolve the crisis before a 10-yearly handover of power later this year, when seven of its most senior leaders will stand down from their positions and hand over to a new generation, they say.

"It is quite clear that the authorities have reached an agreement over Bo Xilai," said Joseph Cheng, professor of political science at the City University of Hong Kong.

"(Gu's) trial went so smoothly and according to the script... there was no mention of corruption and Bo Xilai's name wasn't mentioned."

Bo was sacked from the powerful 25-member Communist Party Politburo in April and placed under investigation for violating party discipline -- usually code for corruption. Nothing has been heard from him since.

Gu's trial drew comparisons with that of Chinese leader Mao Zedong's widow Jiang Qing, who along with the three other members of the "Gang of Four" was convicted for fomenting the tumultuous Cultural Revolution.

While murder carries the death penalty in China, legal experts say Gu is likely to be spared execution and will instead face a long jail term.

This Old House promotes DIY as a sort of Olympics for some viewers ...

Those who watch the popular ?This Old House? - to help with their DIY tasks - say it's a sort of Summer Olympics because it often involves a marathon of things to do.

Home improvement and remodeling is again on the minds of ?This Old House? fans with millions of these do-it-yourself workers getting back to their many tasks around the house after two weeks of watching the Summer Olympics in London. For instance, Craig and his two friends said they got ?addicted to that women?s beach volleyball because it always seems to be on TV.? In turn, Craig and friends say they must now continue with a long, long list of summer home repairs at their picturesque lake-front community outside Eugene, Oregon, called Triangle Lake. ?I guess I was watching too much beach volleyball for my wife?s liking,? explained Craig with a startled-fawn expression on his face while removing debris from around his house recently.

At the same time, Crag told Huliq during an Aug. 8 interview that ?these downed trees, broken branches and piles of other junk have been a thorn in my wife?s craw since last spring. I guess one thing led to another, and then the Olympics, and now I got a long list of honey do?s; meaning ?honey do this, honey do that.? It never ends.?

Still, Craig and friends expect to sneak back in front of the TV this weekend under the cloak of watching ?This Old House? on PBS, with Craig explaining with a half-shy look: ?This Old House is still safe to watch because the wives know it?s not more Olympics or even pre-season Oregon Duck football. It?s about us getting busy on the house again.?

This Old House still providing DIY tips

What Craig says he enjoys about the PBS classis ?This Old House? ? that airs each Saturday and Sunday afternoons on most PBS stations (check your local TV listings) ? is ?the detail these guys go through to really do it right.?

In turn, this weekend?s offering of This Old House features tips on solar panel installation and faming walls.

Moreover, the program?s website features all previous aired episodes from this season of ?This Old House,? with home remodeling and repair tips on: repairing woods floors, how to fix a clogged sewer, house painting, home window repairs, weather stripping, landscaping for both coastal and homes in the suburbs and the ever-popular kitchen and bathroom remodeling and repair.

Also, the current ?This Old House? crew includes pros Norm Abram, Tom Silva, Richard Trethewey, Roger Cook, and host Kevin O'Connor.

This Old House is now part of the American psyche

Because ?This Old House? has been dubbed ?TV?s original home-improvement show ? per it first aired on PBS back in 1979 ? it continues to grow into a ?sort of reference point for us when we visit our DIY stores to buy tools and supplies for our home repair projects,? adds Craig with a wise-family-friendly look on his face.

In turn, his wife Kelly approaches with a pitcher of lemonade for her ?hard-working husband? whose found the time ? after Kelly says ?he?s been glued to watching the Olympics on TV.?

Also, Kelly has a long, long list of ?honey? do?s? that she and the other local wives have produced to get their spouses moving ?before summer is over,? adds Kelly with a sun-whacked face that tends to pout each time Craig finds an excuse for not doing ?the repairs he promised.?

Family DIY drama, aside, Craig recalls the eagerness in his father?s eyes when watching ?This Old House.?

?I remember we kids would have to make ourselves sparse after dad watched This Old House because he?d always find some yard work or attic cleaning chores for us to do with him. I miss those days,? the homeowner says as sadness broke across his face.

"This Old House" now features more DIY tips

Fans of ?This Old House? may notice that this season?s DIY episodes have featured shorter segments so as to ?teach trade tricks and answer thorny homeowner questions,? explains the show?s host Norm Abram.

This Old House ? that?s now in its 33 year on PBS ? has won a record 17 Emmy Awards and received 82 nominations for simply offering common sense and expert advice on home remodeling and repair. While it?s no Summer Olympics, Craig and his friends think DIY should become an Olympic sport just for the fact that men have learned how to do the sprint, the dash and the marathon ?simply to avoid all the jobs we have to do around here,? adds the husband with an aw, shucks look on his face.

Great Books for Kids and Teens: Teen/YA Review: Sharp North

My son read Sharp North by Patrick Cave back when it was first released in the U.S., in 2009, and he has been telling me to read it ever since!? I finally found the time to tackle it, thanks to my Big Book Summer Challenge, and discovered my son was right: this is a fast-paced, exciting dystopian adventure with a unique plot that pulled me in and kept me reading.

Teenaged Mira has lived a content, simple life in the snowy mountains of Scotland in an isolated village with her adoptive parents.? Then, one day, a strange woman is killed in front of her in the woods, and Mira?s peaceful, happy life is shattered.? The woman leaves behind a crumpled piece of paper that contains a list of names, including her own.?

Suddenly, Mira is questioning everything she has ever been told or believed about her life.? Who is she, really?? Who was the mysterious woman and why was she killed?? Mira feels she must find answers and can no longer trust anyone, so she sets off on her own to follow the clues left by the dead woman, but she has no idea what dangers hide in the wider world beyond her little town and her protected upbringing.?

This unique novel is set in a distant, dismal future UK where relentless flood waters have changed not only the geography of the country but its internal workings as well.? Britain is now ruled by the Great Families, leaving a poor underclass who are barely surviving.? With such limited resources, reproduction has been severely limited, but there are rumors that the Great Families have secret, illegal clones of themselves ? spares ? just in case they are needed.

Cave weaves a complex and intricate story of a time and place very different from our familiar world.? Mira?s journey takes her on a long and dangerous series of adventures, as she follows her heart and tries to do what she feels is right, drawn by the need to find out the truth about her own life. I enjoyed this fast-paced and exciting novel very much.

Woman's hair turns to black fingernails, baffling her doctors

Shanyna Isom has consulted every possible specialist, including a doctor in the Netherlands, but she still as no idea what is wrong with her.

The 28-year-old beautician and former University of Memphis law student has developed a condition so severe, fingernails grow from the hair follicles all over her body.

"Black scabs were coming out of her skin," said her mother, Kathy Gary. "The nails would grow so long and come out and regrow themselves. They are hard to touch and stick you."

The disease so far has affected not only her skin, but her bones and her vision. Because Isom is unable to walk without a cane, her mother helps her out of bed each day.

Doctors at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, where Isom is being treated, told her family that she is the only person in the world with this unknown condition.

And now she has $500,000 in unpaid medical bills. Isom has state insurance, but it doesn't cover medical care in Maryland. Her mother lost her job as a medical receptionist because she looks after her daughter at home, so savings have dried up.

Once a month, mother and daughter travel to Baltimore from Memphis to monitor her treatment.

But now, Isom has put all of her energy into creating the S.A.I. Foundation (so named for her initials) to help others with mystery illnesses.

Bank of America has agreed to take donations at any of their branch offices. Friends have organized fundraisers, and her high school has dedicated a football game to her charity.

Despite her debilitating illness, Isom told ABCNews.com, "I don't know whether to smile or cry. I am very blessed."

On her blog, Pray for Shanyna, she laments: "It has taken all of my hair out and has left my body with scabs all over it, plus I have lost about 200 pounds. Two years ago, I was a healthy woman on my own ... had big dreams and goals that I was following until one day my body completely shut down on me."

Isom was a junior studying criminal justice when the mystery illness first occurred in September 2009, according to WLBT in Memphis, which first reported the story.

She went to an emergency room for an asthma attack and was given a large dose of steroids, which doctors suspected caused an allergic reaction.

After returning home, Isom began itching. Doctors prescribed Benadryl, but it got worse.

"It was uncontrollable and we didn't know what it was," said her mother.

Soon, her legs turned black.

"It looked as if she had been in a house fire and gotten burned," said Gary.

Doctors thought she had eczema or a staph infection and prescribed drugs, but it got worse. Meanwhile, all tests came back negative.

"We could not figure out what was going on," said her mother. "She was just breaking out everywhere. Her body was scabbed all over."

At the same time, Shanyna was losing 10 to 15 pounds a week. A bone marrow biopsy turned up nothing.

It was then her Memphis doctor threw up his hands.

"He said she would be like that for the rest of her life," said Gary. "But I couldn't accept that."

Isom and her family persisted, and in August 2011, Shanyna went to Johns Hopkins.

There, doctors determined that she was producing 12 times the number of skin cells in each hair follicle. Instead of growing hair, the follicles were producing human nails.

Doctors think her skin isn't getting enough oxygen -- she is also lacking sufficient amounts of vitamins A, B, C, D and K, according to her mother.

But with treatment, she is improving.

"Her legs aren't covered in black scabs," said her mother. "They are looking better, and her face just looks like she has a real bad sunburn."

25 Medicines and Still No Cure

Today Isom is on 25 medications, but her insurance only pays for five of them. She is awaiting the results of genetic tests that may give doctors clues to what is wrong.

"The doctors are so caring," said Gary. "It's just amazing how much they have done for her. We really didn't think she was going to make it."

Isom said she slipped into a depression, but now feels uplifted by the support of family and friends.

"I know it's a blessing that I can reach out and touch people's hearts," she said.

She remembers the day at Johns Hopkins when she felt sorry for herself, shuffling through the corridors on a walker.

"I saw a little girl, 4 or 5 years old, and she was walking through the same hall and had the biggest smile on her face," said Isom. "She had braces from [her] hip to her feet and had a walker and held her head up so high. I thought, 'If she can, I can. I had a life. This baby is trying to have a life.' ... I fed off her energy."

Isom said she prayed, "I will never be selfish again."

Gary said their ordeal has been a "nightmare ... to see her whole body shut down."

But she gets her strength from her daughter.

"Shanyna is remarkable," said Gary. "She has been able to hold her head high. I keep telling her we are going to make it, through the grace of God."

Murder trial of China ex-leader's wife ends

HEFEI, China (Reuters) - China's most politically sensitive trial in three decades ended in just about seven hours on Thursday after the wife of ousted Politburo member Bo Xilai did not contest charges of murdering a British businessman, a court official said.

A verdict will be delivered at a later date.

The official's account of the closed-door hearing in the eastern Chinese city of Hefei signals that Gu Kailai and a family aide are sure to be convicted in a case that has ended her husband's career and rocked China's leadership.

"The trial finished this afternoon and the court adjourned," official Tang Yigan told reporters. "The trial committee will announce the verdict after discussion. The date of the verdict will be announced.

"The accused (Gu) Kailai and Zhang Xiaojun did not raise objections to the facts and the charges of intentional homicide."

Gu's trial is seen by many Chinese as part of a push against Bo, an ambitious populist who made powerful enemies as he campaigned to join the next generation of top central leaders.

Bo was formerly considered a contender for the inner sanctum of power - the party's Politburo Standing Committee - in a once-in-a-decade leadership transition that is currently underway. The new leadership is expected to be unveiled in October.

Gu and her co-accused were charged with poisoning Briton Neil Heywood, a family friend, last year. The official said the court was told Zhang, the family aide, had put poison in a drink of water that Gu then gave to Heywood who was drunk at the time.

His body was found last November in a hotel in Chongqing, the city where Bo was the Communist Party chief.

Gu and Zhang face the death penalty if convicted. But many legal experts expect Gu will be convicted but only sentenced to a lengthy jail term.

Entry to the courtroom, in the capital of Anhui province, was restricted but two British diplomats were invited to be present because of the nationality of the victim. Journalists were not allowed in.

As the trial took place, police dragged away two Bo supporters into an unmarked car after they had appeared outside the courthouse, singing patriotic songs that were the trademark of Bo's populist leadership style and condemning the trial as a sham.

"I don't believe it. This case was decided well in advance," Hu Jiye, a middle-aged man wearing a T-shirt and baseball cap, told foreign reporters at the rear of the court building, which was cordoned off by dozens of police standing in heavy rain.

Hu and his friend were then shoved by plainclothed police into a car. His companion, also a middle-aged man, struggled, yelling "Why are you taking me? Why are you taking me?"

INTERNET CHATTER CENSORED

State censorship of Internet chatter on the trial was swifter than normal on Thursday, with users of China's popular Twitter-like service Sina Weibo playing cat and mouse with censors to discuss the case, using word play to try and get around the controls.

Gu, herself a career lawyer, was defended by a state-appointed lawyer with meager experience in criminal cases, leaving little doubt she will be convicted.

The state has decided who will represent Gu, denying her the use of a family lawyer - a move that has also prompted Gu's 90-year-old mother, Fan Xiucheng, to recently complain to the Justice Ministry, according to a source close to the family.

"The answer (from the ministry) was that the legal process did not have to be fully carried out in this case and that Fan should stop pestering them," the source said.

The trial of Gu, glamorous daughter of the ruling Communist Party aristocracy, is the most sensational since the conviction of the Gang of Four more than 30 years ago for crimes during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

But despite British calls for the case to be handled fairly and to unearth the truth around Heywood's death, her defense has instead been entrusted to two provincial lawyers.

The two lawyers, Jiang Min and Zhou Yuhao, could not be reached for comment but a search of public information shows the more senior attorney, Jiang, is a specialist in financial cases and that neither has any obvious connection to the Bo family.

A newspaper profile of Jiang from 2005, which was posted on Jiang's own website, quoted him as saying that he was "an expert in financial law, who rarely conducts criminal defenses", although he has represented some officials accused of corruption in the more than 20 years he has been practicing law.

Little is known of Gu's other lawyer, Zhou, except that he, like Jiang, is from Anhui province. Provincial capital Hefei is a bustling city more than 1,000 km (650 miles) east of the scene of the alleged crime - Chongqing, the vast municipality formerly ruled by Bo.

GREEDY WIFE OR PROTECTIVE MOTHER?

Police sources initially claimed Gu had poisoned Heywood in a dispute over an illicit financial transaction she had wanted him to help her complete, and they portrayed Gu as a greedy wife who was translating her husband's connections into dollars.

But when Gu was formally indicted, the official allegation instead hinted at a personal motive, saying Heywood had made unspecified threats against her son Bo Guagua, a factor that may count as a mitigating circumstance and help Gu avoid execution.

The younger Bo, who is believed to be still in the United States after graduating from Harvard this summer, told CNN in an e-mail that he had submitted a witness statement to the court.

"I hope that my mother will have the opportunity to review them," he added. "I have faith that facts will speak for themselves." CNN said he did not elaborate.

The trial and sentencing of both Gu and Zhang are widely seen as a prelude to a possible criminal prosecution of Bo, who is being detained for violating party discipline - an accusation that covers corruption, abuse of power and other misdeeds.

Bo, who was a favorite of party leftists by promoting himself as a friend of the poor and an enemy of corruption, was sacked as Chongqing party chief in March after his police chief, Wang Lijun, identified Gu as a suspect in Heywood's death.

On Thursday morning, there was no sign of Gu's elderly mother, nor of any members of Heywood's family in or around the courtroom.
