House Beer Brings Ale Expertise to the Short North ...

There?s a new bar on High Street that?s out to expand your horizons when it comes to the beverage you thought you already knew. House Beer, an all-beer bar, is a refreshing break from the typical taps you find at most bars and it makes a concerted effort to let you know there?s far more to beer than Natty Light and Budweiser.

As a friend and I entered the bar, we were greeted by what we dubbed our ?beertenders? for the night, Lauren Paglisotti and Courtaney Wilson (who moonlights as Alanis Morissette?s twin sister?or at least she should). I explained my plight: that I have very limited experience with beer and what little I do have is unpleasant. ?You?re our favorite kind of customer,? they both laughed, and proceeded to explain the way the bar works and the many types of beers in it.

At House Beer, you can purchase beer by the bottle, take home a case, or fill up a growler to take home (think those big, old-timey booze jugs in the cartoons with ?XXX? on the bottle, but smaller and cuter). You can bring your own growler to fill up or buy one at the bar. House Beer has every type of beer you never knew existed. From lights to darks, lagers to ales to ciders, they just about have it all and I?m telling you, if you go in uneducated about beer, you definitely won?t leave that way.

The ladies were more than knowledgeable about the various complexities that go into crafting a good ale. I asked Paglisotti what in the world hops were and what was the big deal about them in beer. She told me hops are a plant of the cannabis family. They?re used to add bitterness to beer, balancing out what would otherwise be a completely sweet beverage thanks to the yeast from the barley.

Not only are hops an important piece of the flavor puzzle when it comes to beer, but so too are the other ingredients. Paglisotti explained that cheaper beers tend to have a lot of filler ingredients such as corn and rice and don?t contain as much of the flavorful barley as more expensive ones. Better beers, on the other hand, have much more barley and better quality ingredients (which, she said, is also why you tend to get less hangovers from them).

There are countless different types of beer and each of course has its own distinct flavor. Understandably then, it can be a little intimidating trying to figure out what kind you like. Fear not. If you?re unsure of how to approach testing out different ales, Paglisotti suggests approaching it in the same way you might think of trying new food. What do you like about the flavor? What do you dislike? Are you a fan of the bitterness or do you like sweet tastes better? What other flavors do you taste in there?

Besides the extensive knowledge they provide, another unique offering from House Beer is its monthly book club. Wilson said that each month a new book is selected and is paired with a different beer. This month?s selection was suspenseful killer thriller Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and was appropriately paired with Monk?s Blood, a spicy, sanguine-colored beer. Next month?s pick is Divergent by Veronica Ross (the beer is undecided so far).

With the only signage being the House Beer logo on the two glass doors, House Beer is an unsuspecting little place that?s easy to miss driving down High Street, and almost as easy to pass by on foot. The interior is probably the size of a large living room in a log cabin and coincidentally (or maybe not so much), it feels that way too. The interior is made completely of wood, including the very unique tabletops made of large slabs of sliced and glossily shellacked trees. Dim track lighting with hanging light bulbs throughout the room gives an unusually comfortable and cozy feeling to the place.

House Beer describes itself as ?a bottle shop and ale house dedicated to providing local art, culture, and beer education.? They really seem to get that there is a plethora of us who are under-informed about beer. So do yourself a favor and go learn all about it down at House Beer. It?s the most fun you?ll have getting an education since your college days?plus the beer is way better.

What Comes After Social Networking - Milwaukee Business ...

By Elliot James

I sometimes try to ask myself what the next great factor will turn out to be online. Since the outset of the substantial utilization of the internet in the 90's, there have been a couple important developments that have altered the arena of website marketing.

The earliest innovation was Google. There were a lot of search engines in the beginning of the web but it was not a lengthy period of time before "google" was a verb and Google was gobbling up over 80% search volume on the web. They are continually in takeover form and working closer to total domination of internet search and maximizing their market share in a few other industries like mobile phones. Watching precisely what Google is working on is a crucial process for anybody who needs to promote on the web.

The next significant innovation was the expansion of web-based streaming video and YouTube. As a result of faster internet speeds becoming more widely accessible, streaming video was accessible and YouTube grew virally mainly because of the simplicity of adding and sharing your own movies. Currently a web-site is not worth squat if it does not have some sort of video to advertise a product or service.

The most recent discovery is still progressing. You guessed it! It's social networking. First it was MySpace, then Facebook and Twitter. The expansion of Facebook and Twitter have been enough to challenge the absolute control of Google, Yahoo, and Bing and shift the manner in which internet surfers spend their time spent online. At this point, an enterprise would be foolish not to ever use Twitter, Facebook, and other social marketing strategies while promoting their venture.

People that predicted these breakthrough discoveries or created them on their own are now extremely rich. People that were prepared to speedily make use of these breakthroughs are reaping the rewards of being adaptive and ready to adapt to an ever-changing internet. Here are a couple of basic questions and ideas to be prepared for the future development on the web.

The Growth of Cellular

Many people are now surfing utilizing their phones and ipads. Site owners must adjust to generate web-sites that are mobile accessible. As use of mobile browsers expands, this will continue to become more and more fundamental. As web developers make their images smaller - mobile displays are getting bigger with tablets more popular. This problem may have been restricted to only a handful of years when mobile phones had really small displays. Regardless, with smartphone browsing on the rise, it's important that site visitors can view your content very easily.

Disappearance of Keyboard and Mouse

When you see people using computers in films set in future decades, they are never making use of a keyboard and mouse. They are frequently making use of some type of multi-screen hologram or speech triggered program. It's likely to happen it's simply a matter of when. So exactly what does this really mean for web entrepreneurs? What should it entail for search engine marketing? Voice search is without a doubt becoming more popular with mobile so online marketers should consider search phrases that are spoken as opposed to entered. The resulting key words could be the very same but usually there is a big difference in spoken word and typed-out key phrases. This is also very crucial for technologies organizations and creators of new products. A lot of income has been generated marketing keyboards and mice over the last several years but they may be on their way out before long.

Google Never Ending

Will there ever be a better manner in which to locate things via the internet rather than typing a search phrase into a search engine (or performing a voice search)? I've been wracking my brain trying to think about what will come after Google and I cannot think of it. One development in the past few years is customized advertising. Google continues to be on the leading edge of this concept. They have so much access to user activity online that they can effortlessly individualize adverts to target advertisements to consumers that have displayed need for these things. This doesn't indicate search will change necessarily yet it may indicate that individuals will take less precious time searching in google and significantly more time simply clicking appropriate advertisements on websites. In any case, it's revenue for Google so they don't care.

Many individuals don't worry about looking towards the next significant technology achievement in computer and online technology but individuals who do can reap the benefit of being the first movers.

Happy Chocolate Milk Day!

It's a day adults and children can be excited about-- September 27 is National Chocolate Milk Day!

The decadent drink was invented by Sir Hans Sloane in 1687. Sloane, a doctor, praised the "health giving" qualities of chocolate milk.

Well, we all know that chocolate milk isn?t exactly diet food, but it can be healthier!

Try my recipe:

  • 1 glass unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tbs. cocoa powder
  • 2 tbs. honey

Stir cocoa and honey together. I usually make this in a larger batch and place in a plastic bottle similar to a store-bought chocolate syrup container. You can reuse an empty store-bought bottle as well.

Pour this mixture into milk, stir vigorously and voila! Deliciousness!

Almond milk has less sugar, fat and calories than cow?s milk, with more calcium and protein. The nutty flavor also just tastes great.

Chocolate milk can be also be made by adding a sweetened chocolate syrup in milk.

10 Mompreneurs Who Made It Big | Toddler Times

top4 300x261 10 Mom Entrepreneurs Who Made It BigI?ve always been inspired by women in business. Particularly, mothers. Even more-so now, years after I?ve started up my own small business and began freelancing as a writer. (It still feels somewhat odd to type out those words). I?ve face hard truths and have had to make tough financial decisions.

When I first thought of opening up my own business, I must admit I didn?t give much thought to the added toll that the first few years of launching a brand (successfully) would have on my family. I only thought of the future. Our financial security for the future. The present got lost. A very tough lesson to learn on measuring what is really important in life. To me, anyways.

That?s when I began to look for success stories. To surround myself with other mothers who were entrepreneurs and working really hard to keep everything afloat and dare I say it, even become?successful. It?s no easy feat juggling work and home life, no matter how you?re working it. To me, making it big as an entrepreneur doesn?t just equal fame and fortune.

Being a?successful?mom?entrepreneur?is all about remaining financially aware and responsible. Staying on top of market and social/technological trends and developing a brand that respects the world we live in, inspires and supports other mothers. Leaders of innovative invention and?solutions?to real issues.

Caroline Freedman & Lauren McCollough of NurturMe

They saw a void in the baby food market. Everything was jarred, thick and heavy - often full of preservatives to keep it "fresh." Together, they created a product line of dehydrated powdered baby food made from organic fruits and veggies that reconstitutes itself with water, milk, or breastmilk. In it's first 10 months, NurturMe went big; sales sky-rocketed and orders started coming in from national chains like Target, Babies 'R' Us and Whole Foods. All that's next for these two mamas is the acquisition of their brand and they can retire for life!

Eden Hertzog of New Moon Cookies

Just because she's my good pal doesn't mean she's not fair game. Conflict of interest? Nah. This woman means business and has been incredibly successful in it. New Moon Kitchen is a vegan brand of cookies that actually taste good. She went from operating out of an apartment with a gas powered confection oven plugged in the living room, making deliveries around Toronto; to running a large warehouse staffed with a bevy of full-time employees. Employees who all reap the benefits of four-day workweeks, in-house yoga classes and shiatsu treatments. New Moon cookies can now be found across Canada and the U.S. in pretty much every major grocery store and Whole Foods Market. Eden herself is the momma to a wily toddler and expecting #2.

Laura Berg of My Smart Hands

Laura Berg has written the holy grail of baby signing. She may very well be the one responsible for the huge trend that it is now. What began a self-created curriculum for her grade 8 students to better help them learn through ASL (American Sign Language), quickly turned into the trademarked brand, My Smart Hands. An international company with over 100 instructors and going strong, Laura's vision and expertise has turned into a company that teaches parents and teachers how to sign with their babies; long before they can talk and to communicate with their hearing impaired children and students.

Belinda Takahashi of The Juno Company

As a classically trained musician, Belinda felt that the world of music for little ones was bereft of quality. Of this we know. Most kid's music? Just. UGH. So she started producing classical music videos and DVDs for kids, featuring her own original stylings. What were once home-movies, The Juno Company quickly became a TV series for babies and preschoolers and of course, the ever popular baby/toddler crack: apps.

Liz Lange of Liz Lange Maternity

As founder and Creative Director of her own maternity line, Liz is well known around the Babbles. If you're pregnant, been pregnant or even thinking about it, you've probably heard of her, especially since she began designing the maternity lines for Target and Nike on top of her own. Liz became pregnant just four months into the launch of her small business (then). Clearly that didn't intercept her success in becoming internationally known, even publishing her own book, 'Liz Lange's Maternity Style: How to look fabulous during the most fashion-challenged time'.

    Michelle Cantrell of Venus Vision

I chose Michelle as a successful entrepreneur of absolute distinction. Her popular website Venus Vision is dedicated to promoting the self-esteem in women. ALL women of varying shapes, sizes, skin colour, religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds. I haven't seen nearly enough of this on the web, done with such well received success. One of her goals that stands out the most to me is Promoting Self Acceptance Amongst Women. I see Michelle as an entrepreneur who made it big because of the vital work she is doing in the on-line community for women and others, and to be able to make a living in doing so. She is a shining example of how much work, knowledge and organization it takes to start-up a business and keep it going.

She may not be an entrepreneur in the traditional business sense, but what does that all mean anyways? If you ask me, since she was named by Forbes as the first person to become a billionaire from writing books... she is one badass entrepreneur. She had a vision, she clearly had drive and determination and has most definitely created a world renowned brand. From a single mom who was on social assistance to becoming one of the world's most famous authors whose books have all landed major motion picture status, theme parks and any other product you can imagine?the Harry Potter brand has been there, done that.

    Paula Deen

Y'all, I LOVE this woman. She is a true survivor. I'm sure not much of an introduction is needed here, as her face and gregarious, winsome personality is pretty famous. However, what you may not know is that Paula Deen didn't always have it so good. Death and tragedy early in life didn't get the best of her, neither did her debilitating agoraphobia. She went from (with the help of her two charming boys), operating her own catering company out of their home to publishing a bunch of top selling cookbooks, is a Food Network star and runs two swanky restaurants oozing the Southern hospitality and charm she is known for. Oprah is her #1 fan.

Menopause Herbs & Menopause Remedies | Jackie's Women's ...

Menopause relief may seem difficult, but with a few tips towards this, you may find the change easier to deal with than you thought possible. Menopause relief can be achieved when a woman is supplied with some vitamins especially Vitamin D and Vitamin B complex. Multivitamins may help in this way and are preferred by health care provider. Menopause relief does not have to come from synthetic hormone replacement therapy. If you are concerned about the side effects of HRT, consider the natural help with menopause our products can provide. Menopause remedies for mood swings are often sought after for women that are experiencing them. You may find yourself feeling overly sad or even very excited without any reason at all.

Female Menopause

Women aren?t getting any preferential treatment, and that goes double when our hormones are imbalanced. Aren?t you tired of night sweats ? sluggish thinking ? hot flashes ? emotional rollercoaster rides ? waking up and feeling as if you haven?t slept at all? Women who experience age-related energy problems and other age-related health problems due to an imbalance of female hormones can be greatly benefited by taking menopause herbs. Female menopause Rejuvenator also helps ease the well-known problems that are associated with PMS in younger women. Women who are experiencing female menopause hot flashes are often self-conscience and quite uncomfortable when a hot flash leads to profuse sweating. A woman may also feel confused, disoriented and may also feel sick to her stomach.
Women with sensitive skin may find patches cause irritation. If you notice any skin irritation, report it to your doctor. Women aren?t truly menopausal until they?ve had an absence of periods for 12 consecutive months. Symptoms and their severity vary from woman to woman. Menopause remedies will help to control the symptoms associated with menopause.

Hot Flashes Menopause

Hot flashes, mood swings, difficulty sleeping ? these are some of the perimenopause symptoms you?ve been dealing with. Share your experiences, thoughts, frustrations and meditations on the life change you?re going through. You can safely and effectively sleep through the night without having drenching night sweats.

Fish, liver, brown rice, kale, asparagus, cucumbers, lamb, sesame oil, and safflower are good sources of vitamin E. Women who undergo menopause as the result of a hysterectomy can take estrogen alone. Women in countries with high intake levels of soy report far fewer problems with menopause symptoms especially hot flashes and night sweats. Researchers believe this can be attributed to the isoflavones in soy.

Menopause Herbs

Herbal menopause treatment from naturally occurring plants can dramatically reduce menopause symptoms and prevent diseases caused by the loss of oestrogen in the body. Oestrogen that occurs in plants is called phytoestrogen. Herbal remedies for menopause relief may include herbs and natural supplements to give relief from menopause and it may include Hen?s Egg Shell Calx, zahar mohra power, Terminalia chebula and Saraca indica herbs. The Saraca indica herb is a useful herb to decrease disorders from menopause. Herbal teas, and using onion, garlic and lemon instead of salt should help as well. One study at UCLA noted that garlic halted the advance of heart disease in post-menopausal women.

Menopsause herbs and herbal progesterone-like qualities are found in sarsaparilla, ginseng, licorice root, bloodroot, red clover, nettle leaf, nutmeg, damiana, turmeric, sage, oregano, thyme, and unicorn root. Herbs can be very effective in the prevention of illness, the improvement of symptoms or the treatment of mild problems. If you intend to use menopause herbs and are using them to complement your medical regimen, be sure to inform your doctor and pharmacist.

Pedal-powered espresso cart a hit for java junkies

8 hrs.

An award-winning pedal-powered espresso cart is generating buzz as a fine way for eco-conscious java junkies to get their daily fix.

Amos Reid Field and Lasse Oiva, graduates of the Royal College of Art in London, describe the Velopresso as a ?celebratory fusion of human power, sensory pleasures and technology -- old tech with hi-tech, bicycles and coffee, their engineering and aesthetics.?

Pedals on the modified tricycle push the cart down the road and grind beans, meaning no whirring motors to startle caffeine-deprived heads.?

Campaigns pick Iowa poll sites for favored voters

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? In the weeks before Election Day, University of Iowa students will have a dozen places on campus to vote for President Barack Obama or challenger Mitt Romney.

Residents in the heavily Latino city of Denison will be able to cast ballots at a Mexican grocery store. Those living in the Republican-leaning Des Moines suburbs will get to vote early at evangelical churches. And voters in the state's most conservative county, Sioux, will be able to make their picks at a small-town library.

Iowa is one of 32 states that allow early voting, and both presidential campaigns are trying to take advantage of an unusual state law that gives political supporters a big say in where the ballots are cast. As voting begins Thursday, the sudden profusion of conspicuously Obama-friendly or Romney-friendly polling places in this key battleground state will serve as a novel example of how the trend toward flexibility is morphing the tenets of Election Day across the nation.

Iowa's law allows anyone who gets the signatures of 100 county voters to choose a specific voting place in that county. Election officials must hold balloting at that site for at least one day in the 40 days before the Nov. 6 election. The law is apparently the only one of its kind in the nation, said Jennie Bowser, who tracks election law at the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Both campaigns filed a batch of petitions before last week's deadline calling for satellite voting at locations carefully chosen to make it as easy as possible for their backers to vote.

"This is substantially more than we had in the last presidential," said Tim Box, an elections administrator in Linn County, the state's second-largest, which received 12 petitions from the campaigns. He is preparing to operate sites at a union hall, on three college campuses and at an African-American church in response to Obama campaign petitions and at Lutheran churches where voting was sought by Romney's backers.

Obama campaign spokeswoman Erin Seidler said the campaign is using the polling place petitions to target key parts of the electorate Obama needs to win: college students, Latinos in small towns and African-Americans in bigger cities.

"We are strategic in how we are reaching out to voters," she said.

Romney campaign spokesman Shawn McCoy said the GOP is also spotting polling places "so that more Iowans have an opportunity to voice their support for Gov. Romney."

In most states that allow early voting, state laws direct local election administrators to choose the polling places. They typically favor neutral sites that are accessible for the general public such as libraries and courthouses, as do Iowa officials when they pick locations on their own.

Iowa's petition law was passed decades ago to allow residents to seek early voting in counties where officials refused to set up satellite sites. But as early voting became more popular, partisans have increasingly gamed the process in a way that critics say calls fairness into question. About 35 percent of Iowa voters cast ballots before Election Day in 2008, above the national average of 30 percent.

"It's partisan chaos, which ought not to happen," said Doug Lewis, executive director of the Election Center, a nonprofit organization in Houston that trains election officials on best practices. "I can't fault the campaigns for figuring out the weaknesses in the law and therefore capitalizing on it. But what that does for Iowa is it gives the election a skewed process."

The practice increased in 2010 and could intensify this cycle. In the midterm election, Republicans collected petitions for polling places at evangelical churches in Ames; two churches even opened polls during Sunday services, sparking criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union. Officials in Johnson County, a liberal stronghold that's home to the University of Iowa, operated a record 27 petition-requested sites in 2010.

This year, Johnson County Auditor Tom Slockett received a similar deluge of petitions seeking sites at the university's law school, residence halls, student union, main library and more. The influx of petitions has worried local elections officials, who say they cause last-minute logistical and budgeting headaches.

"I have long felt that the bar is too low to request satellite sites," said Slockett, recalling he was once forced to host a site on the stairwell of an academic building, the only place where voting could be set up. But attempts to change the law to make it harder to petition have failed.

In Black Hawk County, Democrats petitioned to open six sites on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls and one site at a black church in Waterloo. Republicans petitioned for voting at the American Martyrs Retreat House, which is operated by the Catholic Church, in rural Union township. The number of petitions is up significantly from four years ago, county elections manager Kyle Jensson said.

"We'll be scurrying to so many places," Jensson said.

In Denison, a city of 8,300 in western Iowa that is more than 40 percent Latino, the Obama campaign petitioned to require voting at La Jalisciense Tienda grocery store and in an empty former Mexican restaurant. Crawford County Auditor Terri Martens said she worried that non-Latinos who do not shop or eat at those locations wouldn't feel comfortable voting there.

"It seems like the purpose that this group is using it for is to yank one sector of the public out of the voting crowd and make it ultra-convenient for them," Martens said. "My job is to make it convenient for all voters. I'm having a difficult time with this."

Martens said she was also frustrated with the tactics the Obama operatives used to secure voting at locations they wanted.

"It was, 'If you do this and you guarantee us these days, we won't file any more petitions,'" she recalled. "I was like, 'Come on.' It was disappointing as a registered Democrat myself."

Boeing criticizes union's plan for contract vote

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Tension between Boeing Co and its union engineers notched higher Tuesday, as the jet maker criticized the union's decision to put the latest contract offer to a vote rather than continue negotiations.

The moves follow months of talks between the two sides to replace labor contracts that expire October 6.

The rising tensions raise the specter of a strike that could jeopardize Boeing's engineering abilities as it considers launching new models based on its 787 Dreamliner and 777 jets.

A strike would also raise concern about the jet maker's ability to deliver on its huge backlog of orders, and would recall a costly 2008 strike by Boeing machinists.

On Monday, two bargaining committees from the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, voted unanimously to reject Boeing's latest contract, which would cover 23,000 employees, and sent it to members with the recommendation that they vote it down.

The union said the offer would increase the cost of medical benefits and change retiree benefits, and offered lower pay raises than the expiring four-year agreement.

It also said it will prepare ballots and send them to members for tallying after October 1, and that a separate vote would be necessary to authorize a strike.

"It is our hope that a strong rejection of these disrespectful contract offers will make it clear to Boeing that it must stop attacking its engineers and technical workers and negotiate an offer that respects our contributions to the company's success," the union said in a statement.

Late Tuesday, Boeing took an equally unusual step by sending its own letter to SPEEA members, criticizing the union for halting negotiations.

"We expressed our willingness to meet throughout this week with SPEEA's negotiating team in order to hear the union's response, answer questions and discuss any counter proposals -- especially since we have time left before contract expiration," Boeing said. "The SPEEA negotiations team, for their own reasons, made a decision to cease negotiations and use this unconventional approach."

Boeing declined to make officials available to comment.

Ray Goforth, executive director of SPEEA, said in an interview the union put the contract to members because Boeing had indicated in its talks "that they didn't believe the SPEEA negotiating team really speaks for the members."

He said the contract would take away medical benefits from retirees, who would no longer be part of the contract, and allow the company to make changes to the medical and 401(k) plans without consulting the union.

Goforth said the proposal offers engineers raises of 3.5 percent per year over four years. For technicians, pay would rise 3 percent the first year and 2.5 for the next three years. For both groups, the minimum guaranteed raise is 1 percent.

That compares with 5 percent per year in the current contract, he said.

Goforth said he does not expect a strike right away. He said he expects SPEEA members will reject the offer. Then "we're going to go back to the bargaining table."

But, he added: "If Boeing comes back with some nonsensical offer like they've given here, then we'll probably seek a strike authorization."

Shuttle Endeavour sets off for California museum

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Wed Sep 19, 2012 9:35am EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Riding piggyback atop a Boeing 747 jumbo jet, the space shuttle Endeavour left its Florida home port for the last time on Wednesday and headed to California to begin a new mission as a museum exhibit.

After waiting two days for weather to clear, the specially modified carrier jet sped down the Kennedy Space Center runway shortly after dawn on Wednesday, the first leg of a planned three-day trek to the West Coast.

"There's sadness to see it go, but the space shuttle program had to end for us to move on to the next thing," said astronaut Greg Chamitoff.

NASA retired its three-ship fleet last year after completing the U.S. portion of the $100 billion International Space Station, a permanently staffed research complex that is owned by 15 nations and flies about 250 miles above Earth.

The agency is developing a spaceship and rocket that can fly astronauts to the moon, asteroids and eventually Mars. The first flight with a crew, however, is not expected until 2021.

Russia now flies NASA astronauts to the space station, at a cost of more than $65 million a seat. NASA hopes to buy rides from commercial companies beginning in 2017.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for Challenger, the shuttle lost in a 1986 launch accident that killed seven astronauts. It went on to fly 25 missions, including 12 to build and outfit the space station.

It flew the first assembly mission, carrying up the Unity connecting node, which was attached to the Russian Zarya base module.

"It's hard to believe it was 14 years ago," said Kennedy Space Center director Bob Cabana, a former astronaut who commanded NASA's first station assembly flight in 1998.

Endeavour is the second of NASA's three surviving shuttles to be sent to a museum. Discovery, NASA's oldest surviving shuttle, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center outside Washington.

Atlantis, which flew NASA's 135th and final shuttle mission in July 2011, will be towed down the road to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in November.

NASA lost a fourth shuttle, Columbia, in another fatal accident in 2003. That shuttle was not replaced.

HEADING WEST

Endeavour's cross-country piggyback flight had been due to begin on Monday, but a cold front moving over Texas and into the Gulf of Mexico delayed its departure for two days.

As the sun rose over the oceanside spaceport in Florida, the shuttle carrier jet took off through partly cloudy, pink-tinged skies and headed south for a farewell pass over the neighboring beachside communities.

The duo circled back around to the Kennedy Space Center to give workers and guests gathered at the runway a final glimpse of a shuttle in the sky.

Additional low flyovers past NASA centers in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas are planned, weather permitting, before the 747 lands at Ellington Field near the Johnson Space Center in Houston for the night.

Endeavour is due to depart Houston at dawn on Thursday, refuel at Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas, and head to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, where it will land for the night.

On Friday Endeavour will be flown to northern California to pass by NASA's Ames Research Center at Moffett Field and landmarks in and around San Francisco, Sacramento and other cities.

The final leg of the journey will take Endeavour on a tour over Los Angeles before the 747 jet touches down at Los Angeles International Airport around 11 a.m. PDT (2 p.m. EDT/1800 GMT).

The shuttle will be taken off the carrier jet and moved to a United Airlines hangar to be prepared for transport next month to the California Science Center, about 12 miles from the airport.

The trip to the museum, which will take place along Los Angeles neighborhood roads, requires some 400 trees to be cut down and the temporary removal of hundreds of utility poles, street lights and traffic signals to accommodate the 175,000-pound (79,379-kg) winged spaceship.

The California Science Center plans to plant 1,000 new trees to replace those taken down for Endeavour's road trip. The shuttle is due to go on display on October 30.

QB Newton helps lead Panthers over Saints 35-27

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Cam Newton says the attitude is changing in Carolina.

The second-year quarterback said there's a new swagger and confidence permeating the organization ? and that fans finally got a chance to see it on Sunday.

Newton threw for 253 yards and ran for a career-high 71 yards to lead the Panthers to a 35-27 win over New Orleans, leaving the NFC South champion Saints 0-2 for the first time since 2007.

"The vibe is changing," Newton said. "Not only this team, but the whole organization. With this organization I think the fans are building as well. Today we found out so much about ourselves. Our potential is through the roof."

Newton said it's now a matter of the Panthers realizing that promise.

Carolina's offense, which finished fifth in the league in scoring last season, finally got clicking and the defense played well for the second straight week, intercepting Drew Brees twice.

It was Carolina's first win over New Orleans since 2009.

"Times change," wide receiver Steve Smith said with a smile.

Coach Ron Rivera said a loss to Brees and the Saints would have been tough to take, especially with a tough game coming up Thursday night against the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

"The way we responded as a team this week was outstanding," Rivera said. "I think the attitude, the effort was great."

The Panthers (1-1) tied a club record last week with 10 yards rushing in a loss to Tampa Bay in the season opener.

They had no such problems moving the ball against the Saints. They got the running game going in the second quarter and rolled up 219 yards on the ground and 463 overall.

Newton, DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert all scored on short touchdown runs, and Smith overcame a sore knee to finish with 104 yards receiving ? the 39th 100-yard receiving game of his career.

Jonathan Stewart hauled in a 17-yard touchdown catch for the Panthers and Brandon LaFell had six catches for 90 yards.

Newton kept the Saints off balance all day, running eight times for 66 yards in the first half as coordinator Rob Chudzinski used a variety of plays that allowed Carolina to take a 21-13 halftime lead.

"You do read option, read option, read option and then get them to play seven or eight in the box and you've got so many variations of plays and passes you can run off that," Newton said.

Added Tolbert: "The zone read was one of the plays that we saw on film that they was kind of vulnerable to. It was working so we stuck with it. "

When the Saints began to figure things out, Newton would find open receivers who beat one-on-one matchups on the outside.

On one second-half play there was not a defender within 20 yards of Smith when he hauled in a pass from Newton along the right sideline and raced 66 yards before being dragged down.

"I was shocked just as much as anybody," Newton said. "Of all of the people on this field to be wide open, you would think Smitty would be the last person. But that is what type of pressure the zone read gives us."

Panthers tackle Jordan Gross said bouncing back from last week's poor offensive outing was big. Gross said he's never been on a team that has run the ball as poorly as the Panthers did last week.

"We played like we're capable of," Gross said. "I would expect days like this to be the standard, not last week."

The Saints, meanwhile, have serious concerns on defense.

They've allowed 922 yards and 75 points in two games against Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III.

"If you look at our defense, and you look at the two offenses we've played, we've played the most unconventional offenses in the National Football League," said interim coach Aaron Kromer, who is running the team because coach Sean Payton and assistant head coach Joe Vitt are serving suspensions for their roles in the Saints bounty scandal. "So do we have to do better against those styles of offenses? Yeah, we do.

"One thing we need to get settled in on is that style. But we've played two good offenses, and we just need to keep working at it and plugging away."

Brees came in having won five straight starts against Carolina.

He threw for 325 yards, but was intercepted twice, including once by Charles Godfrey, who returned it 9 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers only sacked Brees once, but pressured him into getting rid of the ball early several times. Brees was twice flagged for intentional grounding.

Brees briefly appeared to be hurt in the third quarter when defensive end Greg Hardy collapsed the pocket on came crashing down on his leg from behind. Brees hobbled off the field but returned for the next series, never missing a play.

"It's fine," Brees said. "It just got rolled up on in an awkward position."

The last time the Saints started 0-2 was five years ago when they finished 7-9 and failed to make the playoffs.

They'll look to rebound next Sunday at home against Kansas City.

"The challenge now is keeping from that mentality of why it's happening, or pointing fingers and saying, 'This guy isn't doing what he's supposed to,'" said Saints tackle Zach Strief. "That's dangerous. That's poisonous to a locker room."

NOTES: The Panthers are 6-1 over the last two seasons in games in which Newton does not throw an interception. ... Smith was carted to the locker room at one point in the third quarter after reinjuring his knee, but returned to the game. He said afterward he's fine. ... Pierre Thomas had 110 yards rushing for the Saints and Darren Sproles had 13 catches for 128 yards receiving. ... Charlotte Bobcats owner and former NBA great Michael Jordan took in the game from a luxury suite.

Analysis: Anti-Islam film diverts world's attention from Syrian civil war

BEIRUT - For the embattled Syrian regime, the crudely produced film mocking Islam that has unleashed fury across the Muslim world could not have come at a better time.

Images of furious protesters targeting Western diplomatic sites in Libya, Egypt, Pakistan and elsewhere have diverted the world's gaze from the bloodstained streets of Syria, where President Bashar Assad is trying to crush an 18-month-old uprising.

The crisis over the film also has reinvigorated militant rhetoric that U.S. and Israel are the real enemies of Muslims, taking the heat off of both Assad and his loyal and powerful ally in neighbouring Lebanon, the militant group Hezbollah.

On Tuesday, Syria's Cabinet condemned the movie, titled "Innocence of Muslims." In its first official reaction, the Cabinet said the film about the Prophet Muhammad is "cheap and provocative," adding that it's "part of a Western project that aims to infringe upon the nation's heritage and symbols ... as a prelude to control its potentials and wealth."

It remains to be seen whether the controversy will result in any lasting gains for Syria or for Hezbollah, whose reputation has suffered severely for siding with the Assad regime even after supporting revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain.

The demonstrations over the film, while fervent, were relatively small to begin with, and they appear to be tapering off in the Arab world. Still, Hezbollah is determined to keep them going, which serves the interests of the Shiite militant group as well as Assad.

Assad's fall would be a nightmare scenario for Hezbollah. Any new regime led by Syria's majority Sunni Muslims would likely be far less friendly ? or even outright hostile ? to Shiite Muslim Hezbollah. Iran remains the group's most important patron, but Syria is a crucial supply route. Without it, Hezbollah will struggle to get money and weapons as easily.

The Syrian conflict has descended into a civil war, with neither side able to strike a definitive blow against the other. The result is a murderous stalemate, with a growing sense of worldwide horror over violence that activists believe is responsible for killing 23,000 people.

The prophet film, however, has exposed a well of deep anger and frustration directed far beyond Syria's borders ? and Syria and its allies are seizing on it.

In his first public appearance since 2011, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah told tens of thousands of rapturous supporters Monday that there must be sustained demonstrations against the film.

There are four more rallies planned this week in Lebanon, starting Wednesday, as Hezbollah tries to redirect popular rage against the U.S., describing the film ? which is amateurish and intentionally provocative ? as an unprecedented attack on Islam.

"The world should know that our anger is not a passing thing. ... This is the start of a serious campaign that must continue all over the Muslim world in defence of the prophet of God," said Nasrallah, who rarely appears in public for fear of assassination.

"As long as there's blood in us," he added, "we will not remain silent over insults against our prophet."

Nasrallah has said he considers the film the worst insult to Islam mainly because it is available online and anyone can access it.

"I think that this level of offence is very big, very grave and unprecedented," he said in a televised speech recently. He said the film is more of an insult than the 2005 publication by a Danish newspaper of cartoons depicting the prophet, which unleashed a wave of violent protests by Muslims; and British author Salman Rushdie's 1988 novel, "The Satanic Verses," inspired in part by the life of Muhammad.

Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a religious edict in 1989 calling for Rushdie's death, leading the writer to live in hiding for a decade.

Hezbollah is harnessing the outrage over the film, an apparent attempt to keep the issue alive and to bolster its standing a defender of Muslim dignity and a moral force in the Arab world. Many in the crowd Monday wore headbands of green and yellow ? the colours of Hezbollah; others hoisted Syrian flags to show their allegiance to Assad, a sign of the strong links between Syria and Hezbollah.

But the group also appeared to be trying to ensure the gatherings don't descend into violence, planning them only in areas where Hezbollah has control. None of the rallies targets the heavily fortified U.S. Embassy in the hills outside Beirut.

The movie portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. Protesters have directed their anger at the U.S. government, insisting it should do something to stop it, although the film was privately produced. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton criticized it as "an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with."

For the moment, the masses who have risen up against Assad appear to be drowned out by those chanting against more familiar enemies ? the United States and Israel.

"Death to America!" the crowds shouted Monday in Beirut. "America is the great Satan!"
