South Florida Lawyers: "Concierge" Legal Services?

You know how some doctors charge wealthy parents a lot of money so their kids can be ushered in a side door when they have the sniffles?

(That way they can avoid the 99% sitting in the waiting room with actual medical issues.)

Well, picking up on the medical profession, an enterprising Fort Lauderdale law firm is now offering "concierge legal services":

?We are not a nine to five practice,? partner Howard N. Kahn points out. ?Business owners and medical professionals do not work routine hours. If a legal issue arises on Saturday, clients know they can reach us. We will explain their legal options and outline a practical course of action so they are ready to conduct business Monday morning.?

?Concierge medicine has gained popularity in recent years, despite high admission fees and annual retainers,? said attorney Marcy Resnik. ?Our approach to concierge legal services provides the same level of personalized attention, but without the additional costs. My commitment is to be available to clients when legal questions arise outside of normal business hours in my law practice of divorce, foreclosure defense, and commercial litigation.?

Concierge legal service is available to clients across the State of Florida, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Naples, Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and other locations. Mr. Kahn, who is trained as a CPA, also serves as an arbitrator in securities disputes subject to Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) arbitration.

Clients who select the concierge law service work directly with the partners, stay informed with regular case updates on the status of transactions, and have on-going access to attorneys via telephone, email and face-to-face meetings at the client?s convenience, all for no additional cost. The law partners at Kahn, Chenkin & Resnik each have over 20 years of legal experience, giving them the ability to quickly assess a legal situation and recommend appropriate options, including negotiation, arbitration or litigation.?

Ok, I appreciate the marketing angle here and wish these folks well, but isn't taking a phone call from a client on a Saturday also just called "legal services"?

Asia stocks fall as US economic growth falls short (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stock markets fell Monday, with slower-than-expected growth in the U.S. and uncertainty about a tentative deal to resolve Greece's debt crisis weighing on investor sentiment.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.6 percent to 8,785.22. South Korea's Kospi was 1.2 percent lower at 1,940.82 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 0.5 percent to 20,401.32. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.4 percent at 4,272.40.

Benchmarks in Singapore and the Philippines also fell. Shares in mainland China were mixed after being closed for a week for Chinese New Year holidays. Taiwan and New Zealand rose.

European leaders were to meet later Monday in Brussels to discuss austerity and belt-tightening measures as well as a tentative deal reached Saturday between Greece and its private investors that could avert a disastrous Greek default on its debt.

If the deal holds and works, it will help prevent a potential shock to the world banking system. But it doesn't resolve the weakening economic conditions in Greece and other European nations as they rein in spending to get their debts under control.

Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said that "the Greece debt issues will remain a source of uncertainty and might dampen the risk mood ahead of the EU summit today."

Under the agreement, investors holding 206 billion euros ($272 billion) in Greek bonds would exchange them for bonds with half the face value. The replacement bonds would have a longer maturity and pay a lower interest rate.

The deal would reduce Greece's annual interest expense from about 10 billion euros to about 4 billion euros. When the bonds mature, Greece would have to pay its bondholders only 103 billion euro.

It is unclear how investors who buy and sell the bonds of other debt-burdened countries, such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, will react. If they drive up borrowing costs for those countries, the debt crisis could get worse.

Private investors hold two-thirds of Greece's debt, which is equal to an unsustainable 160 percent of its annual economic output. By restructuring the debt, Greece hopes to make it a more manageable 120 percent by decade's end.

On Wall Street, stocks mostly fell Friday after the government said the U.S. economy grew more slowly than expected in the last three months of 2011.

Economic growth for October through December came in at an annual rate of 2.8 percent. That was the fastest of 2011 but lower than the 3 percent that economists were looking for.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.6 percent to 12,660.46. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 0.2 percent to 1,316.33. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4 percent to 2,816.55.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was down 36 cents to $99.20 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 14 cents to end at $99.56 per barrel on the Nymex on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3180 from $1.3208 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose slightly to 76.74 yen from 76.72 yen.

Denver appeals court upholds military impostor law (AP)

DENVER ? The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Friday that a federal law making it illegal to lie about being a war hero is constitutional and making false statements is not always protected free speech.

The ruling by a three-judge panel of the Denver-based court reverses a district judge's decision that the Stolen Valor Act violates the First Amendment.

Courts in California, Georgia and Missouri have considered similar cases, and the 9th U.S. Circuit Court in San Francisco struck down the law on the basis of free speech. The U.S. Supreme Court said in October it would take up the issue of whether the Stolen Valor Act is constitutional.

The Colorado case involves Rick Strandlof, who was arrested after claiming he was wounded in Iraq as a Marine and had received military medals. His lawyers have acknowledged the claims were false.

"As the Supreme Court has observed time and again, false statements of fact do not enjoy constitutional protection, except to the extent necessary to protect more valuable speech," Judges Timothy M. Tymkovich and Bobby R. Baldock said in the ruling. "Under this principle, the Stolen Valor Act does not impinge on or chill protected speech, and therefore does not offend the First Amendment."

Judge Jerome A. Holmes, who dissented, said, "I am troubled by the majority's conclusion that false statements of fact ? even those that are knowingly made, with an intent to deceive ? are categorically outside the protective walls of the First Amendment."

It wasn't immediately known whether Strandlof would appeal. A phone message seeking comment was left for his lawyer, John T. Carlson, on Friday.

Congress passed the Stolen Valor Act in 2006 with overwhelming support. It has been used only a few dozen times.

In arguments before the 10th Circuit last year, Justice Department lawyer Joe Palmer said the law is constitutional because the government has a compelling need to punish impostors to protect the integrity of military medals. Carlson argued that the fact a statement might be offensive doesn't mean it isn't protected by the First Amendment.

Strandlof founded a veterans group in Colorado Springs and said he had received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. His claims were questioned, and the military said it had no record that he ever served. He was charged in 2009 with violating the law, but a federal judge dismissed the case, saying the U.S. government had not shown any compelling reason to restrict that particular type of speech.

The California case, which U.S. Supreme Court decided to review, centers on the government's prosecution of Xavier Alvarez of Pomona, Calif. Alvarez, a member of the local water district board, said at a public meeting in 2007 that he was a retired Marine who received the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military decoration. He had never served in the military.

3 bodies found in Rio buildings collapse (AP)

RIO DE JANEIRO ? Three bodies were pulled from the rubble of three collapsed buildings on Thursday, an official with the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department said. Another 21 people were still missing after the buildings went down in the city's historic center.

Mayor Eduardo Paes said a structural problem may have caused a building of about 20 stories to collapse at about 8:30 p.m., and that apparently caused the collapse of two smaller buildings nearby. Officials were still investigating the causes, however.

In addition to the dead and missing, at least six other people were treated for injuries caused by the accident, which left rubble and thick dust strewn over a wide area near Rio's famed Teatro Municipal and the Fine Arts Museum.

One of those pulled out alive was Marcelo Moreira, a janitor in an eight-story building that fell.

"He stayed behind to finish a little bit of work," said Rosalvo Alves, the building's main doorman, who had spent the night in a local hospital with his friend. "We shut down at 8. I left, and he was supposed to come too. Now this; he's hurt, our jobs are gone, everything is gone."

Alves worked in the building for 38 years, and said he had never noticed any problems.

A cloud of dust was still drifting from the building the next as rescue crews dug through tons of brick and twisted metal, hoping to find survivors.

"Firefighters and others are working to find the missing," said Moises Torres, a spokesman with the Fire Department who confirmed the numbers of dead and missing. "We have hopes of finding people alive."

Relatives and friends of the missing gathered inside a nearby government building, taking shelter from from the scorching sun as they waited for news.

Francisco Adir was trying to get information about a friend who had been attending a computer course in the in the largest of the three buildings.

"We think he's alive. At 3 a.m. he managed to call his girlfriend and say, 'Hello, love," before his phone went dead," Adir said. "The rescuers haven't given us any information, but the family is hanging all their hopes on that phone call."

A building inspector told the Globo television network that a survivor from the collapse was a worker on a construction project being performed in the first building that went down, and that illegal projects could have led to the collapse.

"Two projects were happening in the building, on the 16th floor," said Luiz Cosenza, head of the accident prevention unit of Rio's Regional Council of Engineering, in charge of building inspections. "They were illegal works; they were not registered with the council."

He didn't provide details on what sort of construction work was being carried out, but said that it was not being supervised by any registered professional.

Shortly after the collapse, there was a strong smell of natural gas in the area, but Mayor Paes said that probably did not cause the problem.

"There apparently was not an explosion. The collapse occurred because of structural damages," he said. "I don't think there was a gas leak."

'30 Rock': Jenna Stars In The Star-Packed 'Martin Luther King Day' Movie (VIDEO)

Taking a hint from the recent films "New Year's Day" and "Valentine's Day," where the philosophy is to pack as many stars into the film as possible regardless of logic or plot, Jenna Maroney stars in the latest holiday-themed romantic comedy. On the second of two episodes of "30 Rock" (Thu., 9 p.m. EST on NBC), she premiered the trailer for 'Martin Luther King Day,' featuring Nick Cannon, Emma Stone, Andrew Samberg, Liam Neeson, Kristen Bell, John Krasinski and the king of romantic comedies Hugh Grant, among tons of other celebrities.

The trailer captured perfectly the predictability of those movies, as well as the derivative plots and dialogue. At one scene, Cannon tells Jenna, "Sounds like ... you have a dream!"

All of this set up an episode wherein Liz realized that Jenna was far too self-absorbed to be a good friend, so she sets out to find a new best friend. Unfortunately, she finds a woman just like herself, and finds that she doesn't like it when they're both complaining unceasingly. It's so much better when the friend isn't listening at all, so Liz can just vent.

While this was happening, Jack shut down the page program, replacing them with NK (Not Kenneth) units that supposedly know more than even Kenneth does. But NK doesn't catch a foolish mistake Jack makes -- sending the one-year anniversary gifts for the new owner to the 6th floor instead of the 60th. The 6th floor where "TGS" is filmed!

"30 Rock" airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.

RolePlayGateway?

Hello,

I'm looking for a RP partner for a 1x1 roleplay! I don't have any set ideas, but I'm looking for someone who is not afraid to try something new.

Here are some things that you might want to know:

I don't mind any paring - I can do yaoi/slash, yuri/fem-slash, het...I am very open about these things although I tend to lean towards yaoi as I'm more experienced in that. I don't mind doing PG or NC-17 stuff.I can play high-rated things, as I don't really mind getting down and dirty, if you know what I mean. However, that content is strictly off-site email RP as I don't want to break any RPG rules.

I will NOT roleplay Twilight. Ever. Normal werewolf/vampire/magical creature/supernatural RPs are fine, just not when the werewolves have practically no weaknesses and the vampires sparkle.

I can do pretty much any setting sans Western,Star Wars-y sci fi and Historically Accurate RPs. History was never my strong point and I have no interest in the first two. I love romance and dark/horror settings. From fandoms, I can do Naruto, Harry Potter and The Night Angel Trilogy.

I consider myself a literate roleplayer, and I expect you to be at least semi-literate or higher. I also don't want someone abandoning the roleplay out of the blue.

I think that is enough information for you. Also, I have an idea for a roleplay that I would love to do with someone:

(Note: This is written as a yaoi, but can be easily changed to yuri or het.)
A man is shipwrecked on a tropical island and he is the only survivor. At first, he thinks that he is the only one on the on the island and knows that there is no chance of him being rescued. Then he meets another man - who's part of a tribe of people that lived on the island in seclusion for generations. The two later have a romance and the shipwrecked man becomes part of the tribe.

This is only the bare bones of it, as I generally like to work with the people I RP with to flesh things out :) I have a bit more planned, but that's for you to find out some other time!

CNN en Espanol anchor to participate in Fla debate (AP)

MIAMI ? CNN en Espanol is joining the list of Spanish-language networks to co-host debates and forums with the GOP presidential candidates.

On Thursday, CNN en Espanol's top anchor Juan Carlos Lopez will moderate questions from a panel in Miami during the CNN debate in Jacksonville. The debate is also co-hosted by the Hispanic Leadership Network and the Republican Party of Florida.

Last fall, Telemundo anchor Jose Diaz-Balart asked questions related to immigration during an MSNBC debate, and he has since interviewed several of the candidates, including Newt Gingrich. On Wednesday, Univision anchor Jorge Ramos went head-to-head in a series of "Meet the Candidate" interviews with Mitt Romney, Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

Lopez has collaborated with CNN before, but Thursday's event will showcase his talents to a much broader, English-speaking audience.

Sundance documentary examines rape in US military (AP)

PARK CITY, Utah ? The Department of Defense estimates that more than 19,000 military men and women were sexually assaulted by fellow troops in 2010 while serving in the United States armed forces. At least 20 percent of servicewomen and 1 percent of men ? an estimated 500,000 troops ? have experienced sexual trauma while serving.

These troubling statistics motivated documentarian Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering to make "The Invisible War," a film that examines the epidemic of rape within the military, how it affects victims and why so few cases are prosecuted. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it is a contender in the U.S. documentary competition.

The statistics "were just so astonishing that at first we didn't believe it," said Dick, adding that he was equally surprised that no film had been made on the subject.

Through interviews with rape survivors and military officials, "The Invisible War" suggests that it's not just the violence and harassment that traumatizes victims but the absence of impartial justice and personal retaliation they often experience after reporting the incident. A rape survivor's only judicial recourse is to report the attack to her commander ? even if he was the attacker ? and it's his decision whether to investigate and prosecute, regardless of the evidence.

"If they investigate it, and the investigator comes back and says, `I've got a slam-dunk case. I can put this serial perpetrator behind bars,' the commander can, on his or her own, decide, `No, we're not going to send this case to court martial,'" Dick said.

A 2009 study shows that only 8 percent of military sex offenders are prosecuted.

"The Invisible War" introduces viewers to Kori Cioca, who left the Coast Guard after being beaten and raped by her supervisor. Five years later, she still suffers from post-traumatic stress and has yet to receive Veterans Administration approval for the surgery she needs to repair the injuries she suffered during the attack. The perpetrator, who continues to serve in the Coast Guard, hit her so hard that he permanently dislocated her jaw.

Viewers also meet Marine Corps 1st Lt. Ariana Klay, who served in Iraq before being gang-raped by a senior officer and his friend while stationed at the elite Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. Klay's husband, also a Marine, cried as he described his concern and fear that his wife would commit suicide.

Other rape survivors shown in the film, including Cioca, said they also contemplated suicide.

Hannah Sewell, who comes from a military family, said she has trouble convincing herself that she is still a virgin after being raped while serving in the Navy. Her father, wearing his own military uniform, recounts the story through tears.

Dick and Ziering traveled the country to interview some 70 survivors of military rape.

"We weren't really ready for all the stories we heard," Ziering said. "Each one had a lot of similarities and all were equally horrific."

But the filmmakers said they remained optimistic throughout the project and have been gratified by the film's reception at Sundance, where politicians such as U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer of California; U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and U.S. Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio attended the premiere. Grammy winner Mary J. Blige has also pledged to write an original song for the film.

"Our great hope was and continues to be that capturing (survivors') experience and their trauma will help change things for hundreds of thousands of men and women who are in the armed forces," Dick said.

There's also "a history of hope," he said, because when the military set out to banish the segregation and racism that reigned among troops in the early 1960s, they made significant strides in just over a decade.

"They can do the same thing with this," he said.

So why don't they?

"They don't take it seriously enough," Ziering said. "They don't really see, and what we're hoping the film will show is the repercussions of it. They don't understand the amount of damage this is doing and how it really is a national security issue, and also costing taxpayers billions of dollars in just caring for people with this kind of trauma.

"Once that message gets through to them, they will be motivated to make a change, because it's a no brainer. They have to do something."

Semifinals rebranded: 'Big 4' advance in Australia (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? With Novak Djokovic clutching his leg and struggling to breathe, it looked like the "Big 4" semifinal lineup at the Australian Open might not come together.

Then Djokovic's championship instincts kicked in.

The top-ranked Serb held off No. 5 David Ferrer in a second-set tiebreaker Wednesday night and then raced through the third set for a 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-1 win, setting up a rematch of last year's final against fourth-ranked Andy Murray.

Order was restored.

For 10 days, nearly everyone at Melbourne Park has talked about the top four players and how they are on a higher level than the rest of men's tennis. But with the other three already in the semis, Djokovic looked to be in trouble in the second set.

"No, I don't have any physical issues," Djokovic said, playing down any health concerns. "I feel very fit and I feel mentally, as well, very fresh.

"It's just today I found it very difficult after a long time to breathe because I felt the whole day my nose was closed a little bit. I just wasn't able to get enough oxygen."

The win ensured that the top four men reached the semifinals for the third time in four Grand Slams. Murray beat Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 earlier Wednesday, while second-ranked Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer were already preparing for their semifinal showdown, their 10th clash at a major but their first meeting at that stage of a Grand Slam since 2005.

Doubts about Djokovic's temperament surfaced after he won his first major at the 2008 Australian Open. He went another 11 majors before reaching another Grand Slam final, which he lost.

In his first title defense in 2009, he struggled with breathing problems and the heat and had to retire from his quarterfinal match against Andy Roddick.

Trying again to defend the Australian Open title, and again in the quarterfinals, the 24-year-old Djokovic was leading by a set and a break when he dropped a service game against Ferrer.

At break point, he scrambled to hit a defensive lob on his backhand and didn't even wait for it to land out before turning to face the back of the court, grabbing at the back of his left leg. He leaned over and rested his head on the top of his racket. Ferrer was back in contention.

For the rest of the set, Djokovic sneaked looks at his coaches and team in the stands. He cajoled himself at the baseline and took time between points.

At times he looked exhausted. At times he looked sore.

"Look, you know, in these conditions, at this stage of the tournament, when you're playing somebody like David, somebody that has great shots from both sides from the baseline, makes you always play over five to 10 shots in the rally, your physical strength and endurance comes into question," Djokovic calmly explained of his on-court demeanor. "Actually I'm not concerned about that at all.

"I'm really fit and I have no concerns of recovering for the next match. It's just a matter of breathing better through the nose."

That may not be how Murray's new coach, Ivan Lendl, sees it. Lendl has been working with Murray this month, trying to help him break his Grand Slam title drought ? the Briton has lost three major finals without winning a set, including the last two in Australia.

Lendl lost the first four Grand Slam finals he contested, before winning eight of his next 15.

He was doing some scouting Wednesday night at Rod Laver Arena, sitting about 15 rows behind the Djokovic group, surrounded by people waving Serbian flags. He couldn't have missed the sideways glances from Djokovic to his support crew, or the fact that he sat down in a line judge's chair when Ferrer challenged a line call. Murray and Djokovic have been playing each other since they were 12, and know each other so well they sometimes hit together and kick a soccer ball around.

But they haven't been on the same side of a Grand Slam draw for a while. Murray said he always seems to be drawn with Nadal, while Djokovic and Federer have frequently been on the same half.

Murray said he's not necessarily more relaxed in Australia, "just more used to being in this position because of the experience."

"Definitely have more experienced than I had at this point last year because I played deep in the Slams the last five or six of them."

To him, the prospect of not playing Nadal in the semis "doesn't make a huge difference."

"Not like the match on Friday's going to be easy, because Novak's obviously playing great tennis," he said. "It doesn't change too much."

Nadal and Federer will play on Rod Laver Arena on Thursday night, with the Australian great in attendance ? partly to celebrate 50 years since he completed his first Grand Slam of winning all four majors in 1962.

In the day session, 2008 Australian Open winner Maria Sharapova will play reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and defending Australian champion Kim Clijsters will take on No. 3 Victoria Azarenka. Three of the four ? excluding Clijsters ? can finish the tournament with the No. 1 ranking.

Azarenka is the only one of the semifinalists who hasn't won a major ? the last eight women's titles have been shared among six women.

Not so the majors on the men's side, which have been much more tightly held.

The "Big 4" have reached the semifinals of the last two Grand Slams, and three of the last four. But it needs to be put into perspective: that has only happened twice before at the Australian Open, in 1988 and 2005.

And if it's any omen for Federer and Murray, No. 3 Mats Wilander beat No. 4 Pat Cash in the '88 final and No. 4 Marat Safin beat No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt in the '05 final.

It's only the 14th time since the Open era began in 1968 that the top four seeded players reached the semifinals in a major.

The top three have 30 Grand Slams between them. The rest of top 10, based on the pre-Australian Open rankings, had none.

And with Djokovic and Murray winning their quarterfinals in straight sets, the "Big 4" had dropped only three sets between them in five rounds.

Players ranging from former No. 1 Andy Roddick to retired greats have talked about the gap between the top four and the rest of men's tennis widening. No. 7 Tomas Berdych, after losing in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the 2010 Wimbledon final against Nadal, said it was "probably the toughest time to play because of those four really strong guys ... making almost history every week."

On Wednesday night, Ferrer confirmed the gap.

"I think the top four players, they are better than the other ones," the Spaniard said.

And he wasn't sure the disparity will be closed any time soon.

"No, I don't think so. Because the last year, the top four players plays all the finals in the Grand Slams," he said. "They were there in the final rounds. And this year they are doing it again, so ...

"I think the top four, it's another level."

Arab Spring and U.S. reforms make Cuba a tourist hotspot (Reuters)

HAVANA (Reuters) ? The Arab Spring, changes in U.S. policy and economic reforms at home are driving a tourist rush that is giving communist-run Cuba one of its best seasons ever and stretching its ability to accommodate demand.

Hotels are full to the brim and Old Havana, the capital's historic center, is teeming with tourists from around the world, soaking up the warm winter sun in outdoor cafes and strolling through narrow colonial streets.

Along the nearby Malecon, Havana's seaside boulevard, 25 buses were lined up on a recent sunny day, waiting to carry visitors to their next destinations.

At the Bodeguita del Medio, where Ernest Hemingway supposedly drank mojitos and tourists now go to emulate him, almost as many people stood on the stone-paved street waiting to get into the jam-packed bar as were squeezed inside.

"We are at capacity. The beach resorts, Havana city are totally full. In the interior of the country, there is nowhere to find a room, nowhere," said the manager of a foreign hotel company.

Like most other people interviewed for this story, the manager asked not to be named to avoid problems with the Cuban government.

Cuba just completed its best year for tourism with 2.7 million visitors in 2011, and experts say current bookings suggest it will almost certainly beat that number in 2012.

"I think 2012 will be a very good year and I see real difficulties in how to organize and manage all this in 2013 and 2014," said the head of a European travel agency's Havana office.

Tourism is a top hard currency earner for the cash-strapped Caribbean island, with revenues of about $2.3 billion in 2011.

Travel experts say there is continued growth in the number of visitors from Canada, by far the biggest market for Cuba, and rising numbers from countries such as Russia and Argentina.

This high season has also seen a resurgence in visitors from Europe, where numbers had fallen off in recent years, as many people who usually go to North Africa for a winter vacation are now looking elsewhere because of security concerns following the Arab Spring uprisings last year.

The political stability and lack of crime in tightly controlled Cuba are as attractive to them as the island's beautiful beaches.

"It's just a sort of insecurity. Especially in the German market, if there is a crisis somewhere, they immediately stop going. Cuba is viewed as safe," said the travel agency head.

"You want security, that's Havana. I would estimate that from France alone tourism to Cuba is up 20 percent largely because of events in North Africa," said the hotel company manager.

He said Egypt, where tour packages are comparably priced to Cuba and political unrest continues, is losing the most customers to the Caribbean island.

AMERICANS IN HAVANA

Cuban Americans have been flooding into Cuba since U.S. President Barack Obama lifted restrictions for them to travel to their homeland in 2009.

Cuba has not released its yearly tourist numbers by nationality for 2011, but unofficially 375,000 Cuban Americans were said to have come to the island in 2010.

Mostly they stay with family members and are not the ones filling up hotels, but they do rent lots of cars.

They are known to sometimes burn cigarette holes in the seats in a show of spite for the government they or their family fled from, and for the extremely high prices it charges for rental cars, said one of the travel industry experts.

But now the number of other American visitors is climbing after Obama changed regulations in 2011, making it easier for non-Cuban Americans to enter a country the U.S. trade embargo has generally made off-limits in the past 50 years.

"I'm having enormous difficulty finding places for my customers. It's the Americans, they're getting all the good beds," complained a Cuba travel company owner, referring to rooms in the best hotels.

Around Havana, it has become more common to see Americans on the streets and in restaurants, although they are somewhat isolated from other tourists because the new regulations require that they come as part of tours that are supposed to be educational and "purposeful," not recreational.

"I keep hearing there are a lot of Americans, but I haven't seen that many around," said a New Zealander.

In pursuit of what is known as "people to people" contact, they spend their days visiting museums, schools, hospitals and tobacco farms with only a limited amount of time for wandering about.

Americans approached in Cuba to discuss their experience tended to be reluctant to talk and in some cases defensive, apparently fearing retribution from their government.

"We don't want to advertise that we're here. I don't think that would be very smart," said an elderly man as he quickly walked away toward the safety of the Hotel Nacional.

Cuba says that, excluding Cuban Americans, 63,046 Americans visited the island in 2010.

The U.S. government began issuing licenses for Cuba travel under the new rules last summer and most organizations that got them had to spend several months gearing up.

"I think right about now the American groups are starting to come," said Tom Popper, director of U.S. travel company Insight Cuba. He said demand has been strong, and that his group has already brought or signed up 2,200 people for trips.

The National Geographic Expeditions website shows that it has 17 tours of Cuba planned from now through May and all are totally booked.

For Americans, the attraction of Cuba is partly that it has been forbidden fruit for so many years, Popper said.

But for them and others, President Raul Castro's campaign for economic reform is a drawing card as well.

ECONOMIC REFORMS

Under the changes, Cuba is moving away from its stumbling, Soviet-style economy into a communism where private initiative is encouraged and the role of the state lessened. More than 350,000 people now are self-employed, private home-based restaurants are mushrooming and cars and houses can be bought and sold.

"Many people are coming because they want to see Cuba as it has been and is, the old cars and that sort of thing, but they are also curious because they read a lot in the papers about things changing and they want to see that, too," the European travel agency director said.

At the ornate Museum of the Revolution, once Cuba's presidential palace, tourists pause to see the Granma, the yacht that Fidel Castro and his fellow rebels sailed from Mexico in 1956 to start the revolution.

"My family thought Fidel Castro was wonderful and supported the revolution. I wanted to see it now, before it changes too much," said Argentine Abel Castano as he looked at the boat, now in a glass-enclosed exhibit on the museum grounds.

The restaurants, or paladares, are at the top of many tourists' must-see lists because they offer a unique experience of dining out in someone's home and because their food also is usually better than the dreary fare at most state restaurants.

For those in the travel industry, Cuba's success is a blessing and a curse. Sales are good and profits are up, but the demand has put a spotlight on the need to expand and improve the tourist infrastructure, especially in the cities.

Faced with more tourists than rooms last month, the government took the unprecedented step of allowing two travel companies to put their groups in private homes that rent rooms, said the hotel company manager.

And overbooking, especially at the better hotels, is forcing a scramble to find bumped tourists a place to stay. "I do this every day and every day it is terrible," the hotel company manager said.

Cuba's best hotels are not considered equal to the best in other countries and standards drop quickly into mediocrity or worse, depending on price and location. Some are poorly maintained and don't have hot water.

Even at the landmark Hotel Nacional, a recent American visitor complained that his room was "dank" and had a few roaches.

Popper said he tells his tour groups that "all the hotels in Cuba are safe and clean, but coming to Cuba isn't about staying in your hotel, it's about being in Cuba. You need to have the mindset to just go with it."

Cuba has invested heavily in building beach hotels, but in Havana and popular tourist destinations like Cienfuegos and Trinidad, many more rooms, particularly of good quality, are needed. The tourism ministry says there are 52,000 hotel rooms, of which 65 percent are supposedly four- or five-star quality.

"We need more hotels and we need more four-star hotels," said the travel agency director, who estimated that Havana alone needs 2,000 additional rooms.

The travel agency director said the government has moved too slowly to prepare for the tourist boom, and "we will have five years of difficulty" while more hotels are built.

"Business will be good for everybody because people are coming in, but everybody will have to fight for rooms. And I suppose prices will go up," he said.

Advice For The Rookies On Investing - Forex

So you?ve gotten your first job. Congratulations! After taking your friends and family to the best eatery your startup salary can pay for, it is time to think about setting aside some cash. After all, you are never too young to begin investing for the future. But although your reliable piggy bank and financial savings account can help you save for the rainy days, it will take a long time before you can save enough to buy your dream home. So perhaps you should learn how to invest immediately so you can get your hands on a comfortable life for yourself in the future.

It is understandable and even predicted that you are still earning loose change in comparison with your parents because it is your first job. However if you truly must, it won?t prevent you from entering the investment market. No extreme moves yet like purchasing a house and lot yet; you can simply start small. Just be smart, though, and inquire questions about everything unfamiliar to you before you start buying stock shares, bonds, and other investment choices.

Be warned, though, investing is not like saving. You can expect your money to stay as is or gain a little when you are saving. But if you are investing, you must accept that there?s as much likelihood that you will lose your money or a portion of it as you will multiply it. Investing has higher possibility profit but it also has higher risk. perhaps the safest route for novices in the working industry like you is to have a low-risk investment first even if it has low earnings likelihood before diving into more competitive options.

Don?t fret too much if you can?t understand the terms used in investment. Even the veterans in the corporate world still need support in understanding how their investment works for them. Teach yourself with the industry and do your research. Investment broker agents and banks can support you with your questions so don?t hesitate to inquire them. And if you are still not sure with making your own judgment, then you can leave it to the professionals.

Any type of investment needs thorough planning. For investment neophytes, it is better to start with lesser risk types since you may not have enough bucks or even the will to venture on riskier investment options. To start with, only enter it if you have adequate money to do so. After you have already paid the bills, allocate an amount you are cozy with for investment. Finally, don?t stop saving simply because you have an investment already. Do them both simultaneously.

Learn how to invest for the future. Ask professionals for assistance on stocks, trades, health insurance, and other investment options.

I?d Rather Watch Instagram Than A Movie

photoLast week a friend of mine asked me at brunch, innocently enough, "What's Instagram, and why do you use it?" I meekly offered the answer, "It's a way to share photos via the iPhone," and then, feeling like I hadn't done it enough justice, went on the defensive and was like, "Oh but it's really simple and that's what makes it emotional. Like in one click, I can view all these interwoven stories." It turns out he used Instagram himself, and just wanted to hear someone describe its appeal. The appeal of Instagram is, for lack of a better word. simple; the world is moving too damn fast and we don't want the cognitive load of figuring out what we're looking at -- we just want to see simple pretty things. This simplicity is what makes services like Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest a joy versus other entertainment offerings.

Late-night 'Idol' guest? Jim Carrey's daughter

By Craig Berman

RECAP

The NFL is a harsh boss. It can offer opportunities for huge successes?... and also take those opportunities away with its innate unpredictability.

?American Idol? had to be hoping for more lenient treatment than it got from the Lords of Football, but its rare Sunday Night showcase turned into a late-night talk show thanks to the NFC Championship Game going into overtime. By the time the New York Giants slipped past the San Francisco 49ers and the postgame discussions were completed, it was 10:57 p.m. on the East Coast and the audience was bleary-eyed and likely headed for bed.

If they were, not much on "Idol" would have kept them awake.?

The highlight of the night was Jane Carrey, if for no other reason than it made Jennifer Lopez feel old. Carrey?s the daughter of Jim Carrey, the comedian who was a star of ?In Living Color? when J.Lo danced as one of the Fly Girls.?

?I remember you when you were little!? the judge said. ?When did this happen!?

Fortunately, J.Lo was able to interrupt the getting-old montage in her head to pass Carrey to the next round, proving that it?s never too late and it?s never too soon to get a big break. Expect more ?In Living Color? theme lyrics if Carrey lasts in the competition.?

Also noteworthy was Kyle Crews, a University of California-Berkeley student and fraternity member who will totally steal your girlfriend if you let her out of your sight. Don?t say you weren?t warned. He was the top male voice of the night, though he did have the indignity of having Steven Tyler tell him to lose his shirt. This is the same Steven Tyler who showed up last week in a purple hat best suited to a streetwalker and was in an old-school aviator hat with goggles in this USS Midway episode. It would be like Ryan Seacrest telling someone to relax every now and then and not work so many jobs.?

Speaking of jobs, don?t forget about Ashley Robles. Robles, who works at approximately five different gigs while raising her daughter, became the first contestant in recent memory to sing ?I Will Always Love You? and not cause all three judges to leap from the their seats into the ocean to make the bad noise stop. How she?ll get the time off from all of those tasks to keep auditioning is anyone?s guess.

Among the other 53 to make it was Ali Shields, who parlayed a homemade video into a chance to sing for Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show, a trip to the American Music Awards where she got her first kiss courtesy of Mike Posner and her second from Usher, and now a golden ticket to Hollywood. She?s the early favorite to be this season?s wacky comic relief who lasts much longer than expected but doesn?t make the final group. And that, my friends, is why there are so many random singing videos on YouTube.

Jason ?Wolf? Hamlin would also be a great bet to last, since he has an old-school voice and isn?t afraid to take chances, but he also has the looks and mannerisms that would scare small children. He did get to close the show, however, which is usually a good sign for long-term success.

In sadder news, there won?t be a Bikini Girl II, or at least not one from the San Diego auditions, as Jennifer Diley?s outfit got her some leers from Ryan but no love from the judges. Maybe they, like much of the sleepy ?Idol? audience, spent the preceding few hours looking at all the NFL cheerleaders and were too jaded to be impressed.

Did you stay up to watch the San Diego auditions??Tell us on Facebook!

Video: Catching a comet death on camera

Friday, January 20, 2012

On July 6, 2011, a comet was caught doing something never seen before: die a scorching death as it flew too close to the sun. That the comet met its fate this way was no surprise ? but the chance to watch it first-hand amazed even the most seasoned comet watchers.

"Comets are usually too dim to be seen in the glare of the sun's light," says Dean Pesnell at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., who is the project scientist for NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO), which snapped images of the comet. "We've been telling people we'd never see one in SDO data."

But an ultra bright comet, from a group known as the Kreutz comets, overturned all preconceived notions. The comet can clearly be viewed moving in over the right side of the sun, disappearing 20 minutes later as it evaporates in the searing heat. The movie is more than just a novelty. As detailed in a paper in Science magazine appearing January 20, 2012, watching the comet's death provides a new way to estimate the comet's size and mass. The comet turns out to be somewhere between 150 to 300 feet long and have about as much mass as an aircraft carrier.

"Of course, it's doing something very different than what aircraft carriers do," says Karel Schrijver, a solar scientist at Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, Calif., who is the first author on the Science paper and is the principal investigator of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument on SDO, which recorded the movie. "It was moving along at almost 400 miles per second through the intense heat of the sun ? and was literally being evaporated away."

Typically, comet-watchers see the Kreutz-group comets only through images taken by coronagraphs, a specialized telescope that views the Sun's fainter out atmosphere, or corona, by blocking the direct blinding sunlight with a solid occulting disk. On average a new member of the Kreutz family is discovered every three days, with some of the larger members being observed for some 48 hours or more before disappearing behind the occulting disk, never to be seen again. Such "sun-grazer" comets obviously destruct when they get close to the sun, but the event had never been witnessed.

The journey to categorizing this comet began on July 6, 2011 after Schrijver spotted a bright comet in a coronagraph produced by the SOlar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). He looked for it in the SDO images and much to his surprise he found it. Soon a movie of the comet circulated to comet and solar scientists, eventually making a huge splash on the Internet as well.

Karl Battams, a scientist with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, who has extensively observed comets with SOHO and is also an author on the paper, was skeptical when he first received the movie. "But as soon as I watched it, there was zero doubt," he says. "I am so used to seeing comets simply disappearing in the SOHO images. It was breathtaking to see one truly evaporating in the corona like that."

SDO's AIA instrument captured the first ever video of a comet passing directly in front of the sun in the early morning of July 6, 2011. The comet comes in from the right and is very faint. Credit: NASA/SDO

After the excitement, the scientists got down to work. Humans have been watching and recording comets for thousands of years, but finding their dimensions has typically required a direct visit from a probe flying nearby. This movie offered the first chance to measure such things from afar. The very fact that the comet evaporated in a certain amount of time over a certain amount of space means one can work backward to determine how big it must have been before hitting the sun's atmosphere.

The Science paper describes the comet and its last moments as follows: It was traveling some 400 miles per second and made it to within 62,000 miles of the sun's surface before evaporating. Before its final death throes, in the last 20 minutes of its existence when it was visible to SDO, the comet was some 100 million pounds, had broken up into a dozen or so large chunks with sizes between 30 to 150 feet, embedded in a "coma" -- that is the fuzzy cloud surrounding the comet -- of approximately 800 miles across, and followed by a glowing tail of about 10,000 miles in length.

It is actually the coma and tail of the comet being seen in the video, not the comet's core. And close examination shows that the light in the tail pulses, getting dimmer and brighter over time. The team speculates that the pulsing variations are caused by successive breakups of each of the individual chunks that made up the comet material as it fell apart in the Sun's intense heat.

"I think this is one of the most interesting things we can see here," says Lockheed's Schrijver. "The comet's tail gets brighter by as much as four times every minute or two. The comet seems first to put a lot of material into that tail, then less, and then the pattern repeats." Figuring out the exact details of why this happens is but one of the mysteries remaining about this comet movie. High on the list is to answer the not-so-simple question of why we can see the comet at all. Certainly, there are a few basic characteristics of this situation that help. For one, this comet was big enough to survive long enough to be seen, and its orbit took it right across the face of the Sun. It was also, says Battams, probably one of the top 15 brightest comets seen by SOHO, which has observed over 2,100 sun-grazing comets to date. The SDO cameras, in of themselves, also contributed a great deal: despite being far away and relatively small compared to the sun, the comet showed up clearly on SDO's high definition imager. This imager, called the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) takes a picture every 12 seconds so the movement of the comet across the face of the sun could be continuously watched. Most other similar instruments capture images every few minutes, which makes it hard to track the movement of an object that's only visible for 20 minutes.

But ultimately, the fact that one can see this comet against the background of the sun means there is some physical process not yet understood. "Normally," says Goddard's Pesnell, "a comet passing in front of the sun absorbs the light from the sun. We would have expected a black spot against the sun, not a bright one. And there's not enough stuff in the corona to make it glow, the way a meteor does when it goes into Earth's atmosphere. So one of the really big questions is why do we see it at all?"

Figuring out this question should offer information not only about material in the comet, but also about the sun's atmosphere ? and so this opens up the door to a new niche of study. Assuming, of course, that one can spot some more comets. So far SDO has only seen the one passing in front of the sun, though SDO did spot Comet Lovejoy traveling through the corona, as it went behind the sun and reappeared.

Stay tuned, as new sun-grazing comets appear every few days . . .

Lawmakers try to keep anti-piracy bills on track (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Five days before a critical vote, senators are abandoning an anti-piracy bill they had supported after an outpouring of online opposition to tinkering with Internet freedoms.

Senate Democratic leaders still plan to vote next Tuesday on taking up the Protect International Property Act and supporters were scrambling to make changes before then to answer some of the critics, but it was questionable whether they had the 60 votes needed.

Half-a-dozen of the 40 original co-sponsors of what is known as the PIPA bill withdrew their support Wednesday amid a one-day protest blackout by Wikipedia and other Web giants and a flood of emails to Capitol Hill offices that at times doubled normal volumes.

When more than 7 million sign a petition on Google saying the Senate bill and its counterpart in the House would censor the Web and impose burdensome regulations on U.S. businesses, lawmakers listen.

"The overwhelming input I've received from New Hampshire citizens makes it clear there are many legitimate concerns that deserve further consideration before Congress moves forward with this legislation," said Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., one of the senators who pulled back her support of the bill.

Others included Republicans Orrin Hatch of Utah, Marco Rubio of Florida, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Roy Blunt of Missouri and John Boozman of Arkansas. Nearly all cited the earful they are getting from constituents. "I can say, with all honesty, that the feedback I received from Arkansans has been overwhelmingly in opposition to the Senate bill in its current form," Boozman said.

Several Democratic co-sponsors also now say they oppose the bill as it is now written.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has resisted suggestions he put off the Tuesday vote. Reid and the bill's main sponsor, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., say it's too important to delay action on legislation aimed at combating the billions of dollars American content creators and companies lose to foreign copyright violators and counterfeiters every year.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Thursday urged Democrats to shelve the bill for now, saying serious issues with the measure should be resolved before "prematurely" bringing it to the floor.

The Senate bill, and the parallel Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would allow the Justice Department and copyright holders to seek court orders against foreign websites that steal from American content creators. It would bar advertising networks and payment facilitators such as credit card companies from doing business with the offending websites.

The bills have the strong support of the entertainment industry which loses billions every year to foreign copyright violators and from industries such as pharmaceuticals battling fake and sometimes harmful alternatives sold on the Internet. The opposition, as demonstrated by Wednesday's protest, is led by Internet-related industries that say the bills will lead to censorship of the Internet and a surge in lawsuits that will discourage budding Internet entrepreneurs.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., a leading opponent of the bills, said the groundswell of opposition to legislation dealing with the esoteric subject of copyright law showed that Americans understand that "while combating copyright infringement is important, you shouldn't do extensive damage to the Net." He said the protests Wednesday were historic: "In terms of communicating with government the country is never going to be the same."

"It will change the way intellectual property policy is made in the future," agreed Michael Petricone, vice president at the Consumer Electronics Association at a news conference Thursday organized by opponents of the bills. "On the Internet there are no longer any back rooms" where lawmakers traditionally make deals on legislation.

Still, closed-door meetings continue as Leahy works to come up with changes in his bill that might answer critics and increase the chances of getting 60 votes next Tuesday.

Both Leahy and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas, the author of SOPA, say they are open to changes while refuting what they say are mischaracterizations of their bills. "SOPA does not censor the Internet," Smith said. "It only targets activity that is already illegal and only targets foreign websites that steal and sell America's technology, inventions and products."

Smith, whose committee will resume consideration of his bill next month, also said legislation offered by Wyden and Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., that has won some good reviews from the high tech industry, would be inadequate and ineffective. The Wyden-Issa approach would put the International Trade Commission, rather than the Justice Department, in charge of claims against foreign websites.
