Washington D.C., February 27, 2012 In a study published in the March 2012 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Katherine Rice and colleagues, from the Marcus Autism Center, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine, used eye-tracking technology to measure the relationship between cognitive and social disability in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and the ability of children with ASD to pay attention to social interactions.
The study is the largest to date to observe children with ASD watching scenes of social interaction; 135 children, 109 with ASD and 26 without, all approximately 10 years old, participated. The children were shown movie scenes of school-age children in age-appropriate social situations. One set of analyses focused on the differences between children with ASD and typically-developing children, by closely matching a subset of those with ASD to typically-developing peers on IQ, gender, and age. A second set of analyses focused on measures that quantify the broad spectrum of adaptive and maladaptive behavior in ASD by analyzing variation across all 109 ASD participants.
Results indicated that children with ASD were less likely than typically-developing peers to look at other people's eyes and faces, and were more likely to fixate on bodies and inanimate objects. The results also revealed the varying ways in which children with ASD use the information they observe. For the entire group of children with ASD, increased observation of inanimate objects rather than people was associated with more severe social disability. However, for some subsets of the autism spectrum, such as highly verbal children with ASD, whose verbal IQs were larger than their nonverbal IQs, increased looking at others people's mouths was associated with less disability.
"These results help us tease apart some of the vast heterogeneity of the autism spectrum," said Rice. "For some children, atypical looking patterns may be serving as a compensatory strategy; but for others, these patterns are clearly associated with maladaptive behaviors. Objective, quantitative measures of social disability help us to identify these subsets in a data-driven manner."

That?s a question that several legal bloggers have been positing over the last few weeks. The concerns largely stem from studies suggesting that the long-term effects of concussion injuries (which are quite common in football players, including those at the age level of high school and younger) may be far more severe than anybody thought. This is focused around the revelation that suffering large numbers of very minor concussions (which are extremely common in football) significantly increases the long-term risk of severe brain disorders, such as Parkinson?s disease.
There have also been a few high-profile suicides committed by athletes, including a few very promising young football and hockey players. Autopsies revealed that some of these athletes suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is a degenerative brain disorder caused by sustaining multiple concussions over a long period of time. The symptoms of this disorder include severe depression and dementia, which would partially explain the suicides.
As one might expect, there is some fear that this new information might lead to tort lawsuits, which would cost the defendants a large amount of money in judgments and settlements. It?s conceivable that several years of this could become so costly that insurance companies would stop offering liability insurance to football organizations, which would effectively prevent them from operating.
And even if the NFL manages to deflect these lawsuits, or absorb their costs, high school and college football programs may not be so lucky. If a large majority of these programs were shut down, the NFL would have a much smaller pool of new talent, which could bleed it dry in the long run.
Personally, I think that these fears about lawsuits destroying football are pretty overblown. It?s currently the most popular sport in the United States, and generates billions of dollars in economic activity. Furthermore, football players (at least at the college and professional level, where they?re adults) can be said to have assumed the risk of injury by voluntarily playing football.
However, at the high school level, the legal and moral issues become far less clear. After all, most high school students are under the legal age of consent, so it?s hard to claim that they knowingly and intelligently assumed the risk of brain injury. In most situations, a child?s parents can give consent for them. But if you assume that a child cannot make decisions with enough maturity to legally give consent for something (and that?s the assumption that underlies laws that establish an age of majority), and the risk they incur in playing football is permanent brain injury that follows them for the rest of their lives, it?s not really fair for their parents to make that decision for them, either.
Generally, however, I don?t think that football fans have anything to worry about. In fact, a few successful and costly lawsuits against football programs may actually improve its long-term prospects, as counterintuitive as that sounds.
After all, if a few football organizations were sued because some players suffered long-term brain injuries, they would probably have a good incentive to invest in better safety equipment, especially improved helmets. If this equipment significantly reduces the risk of CTE, football clubs will have far less to worry about in the lawsuit department.
Some commentators, while remaining hopeful about the future of football, raise a rather unsettling possibility: the NFL will simply use its substantial lobbying clout to persuade state legislatures to either ban lawsuits against them for CTE, or make such lawsuits so difficult for the plaintiffs that they aren?t worth the effort.
This might save football, but it?s arguably the worst possible outcome ? even worse than football being sued out of existence. If personal injury lawsuits against football organizations are effectively banned, they will have no incentive to invest in safer equipment, or improve their safety rules.
This will mean another generation of young people suffering from chronic brain injury.
Basically, that illustrates the problem with the arguments made by many advocates of ?tort reform.? We don?t face a choice between lawsuits destroying a beloved sports institution (or the entire economy), and making it impossible for victims of negligence who have suffered real injuries from receiving compensation from those injuries. But that?s how tort ?reformers? often frame the debate.
In a legal system that guards against frivolous lawsuits, the civil justice system and the litigation process can be a force for positive change. If football clubs face lawsuits over brain injures, and these lawsuits become too costly, it will be in their economic self-interest to take steps to make the sport safer, either through investments in better safety equipment, or modifying the rules of the game to minimize head injury, or both.
There is historical precedent for this, as well. In 1905, football had just established itself as a popular sport in America. As more people played the game, more players began dying from injuries sustained on the field. It got to the point that there were serious proposals in Congress and state legislatures to ban the sport altogether. President Roosevelt persuaded the NFL to change the rules to eliminate certain plays that were responsible for most of these injuries. And thus, the sport was saved.
I?m sure a lot of people complained back then that these changes destroyed the spirit of the game. But over 100 years later, the sport of football is doing just fine. I think this is simply an example of history repeating itself. Football will adapt. And, hopefully, they won?t find it necessary to make it impossible for people who have been injured to recover compensation for their injuries.

?While addressing the participants, as chief guest, at the HR conclave ? INNOVATIONS IN HR ? GEARING FOR 2020 organised by FIIB on 4th February 2012, Mr. Suresh Tripathi, President HR, SRF Limited, talked about paradigm shifts that might have to be addressed for gearing for 2020.? He observed that because of a boundary-less world, there is homogeneity in consumption patterns, now that every item is available in India right from a BMW car to an iPad. He emphasized on changing global economic scenario due to which, manufacturing processes were not at one place. ?Now business flows in all directions. Wherever the manufacturing costs are less, business leaders set up their units. This impacts HR mobility i.e. in the movement of work force. He felt that a round globe has become flat because of Internet and universal information access, which is called ?Globality?. This has paved the way for integration of HR models of acquiring and retaining talents. He talked about ?Demographic dividend? from which India may get benefit as 240 million young people would be added to the work force in the next 15 years. He referred to a paradigm shift from the present vertical integration to virtual integration. He gave example of ?AIRTEL? for virtual integration. He also brought out a radical concept of small fish grabbing big fish. He visualized that small businesses which are nimble, agile survive because volumes are at bottom of the pyramid. As far as loyalties and commitment to organizations are concerned there is no long term time dimension. A future employee may commit 4 hours in the morning to one organization and afternoon to some other orgnisation or to himself. Commitment is only to the extent of contracted time and deliverables. Results of such paradigm shifts would be no human touch in virtual organisations, increase in internal stress and organisations would become faceless. He predicted that HR would have to gear up itself to deal with these changes.
In his keynote address Mr. B.Ram Mohan, Vice President- HR Everest Industries, talked about tomorrow?s world as a melting pot of diversity and constant mobility. According to him HR should be the navigation tool. He felt that encouraging innovation and planning ahead for future work force are essential tools for the visionary HR professional. He narrated the journey of HR from blue collar issues to the Board room. He opined that ?HR has often delimited its full flight into the wide space of operational and strategic areas by distancing itself from the supply and delivery chain of the business. ??HR is often short sighted in its vision of setting up goals for self?. He advocated that HR should come out of its self-acclaimed glory of the name tag of HR Professional, to mentally step out of the parameters of HR and really observe oneself as part of the business process to understand how to contribute best to the organization. According to him needs of talent in 2020 are ?Autonomy & Freedom?, ?Higher flexibility and work- life balance?, ?Customized career paths? , ?Transparency? , and? ?Opportunity to make a difference globally?. He mentioned that the following are some of the expectations of employers from future employees: domain knowledge, professionalism ,? high ethical standards, flexibility to cope with different business situations and adaptability, result orientation and execution ability, understand global business environment, partners in co-creating future businesses, creativity and innovation, maturity and emotional intelligence, and managing self. While visualizing future role of HR, he felt that HR should understand business, align stakeholders around a shared purpose, facilitate change in mindsets, obsessed about development and renewal of people, establish HR as a distinct profession by building appropriate competencies, attract and build a diverse workforce, including those who do not come to office and lastly in doing the above, HR should not forget its fundamental role as employee champions.
While welcoming the participants to the HR conclave, Dr.A.K.Sinha, Director of FIIB, explained about the mission, vision and values of FIIB, thanked both the chief guest and key note speaker for sparing their valuable time from their busy schedule ?to address the participants. He wished that participants would gain lot of insights from this HR Conclave about future role of HR, while it gears to prepare for 2020.
Dr.K.B.C. Saxena, Dean of FIIB? talked about Innovational approach at FIIB that is taking place now. While informing about management innovation as an integrated perspective at FIIB, he explained process innovation of environment and information with HR integration of people, skills and social behaviour. While elaborating about innovation process at FIIB, Dr. Saxena explained how education process (curriculum) dovetails the quality process (Curriculum delivery).
While introducing the HR Conclave topic, Dr.P.U.B.Rao, Chairperson of HR/OB area, dealt with the changes that took place from past to present and the future trends of HR. He felt that in future there may not be any HR department. In fact, every manager is an HR manager since managing people is everybody?s job. Dr.Rao wondered whether the task of interviewing a job seeker would be entrusted to a computer in future, because of technological advancement of mapping the thought process of a human being by computers.
In the first technical session, Mr. Shekhar Ghose, former Director- Personnel, Indian Airlines as chairperson of the session: Innovation in Human Capital Management, dealt with the definition of human capital. He talked about how globalization and advent of knowledge worker brought about the value of human capital. He elaborated on human, organizational and social capital.
Ms.Ishita Adhikari, ?till recently, Head H.R, Kuoni Business Travel, started her deliberations with the concept? of survival of the fittest and Innovation is survival ? age old theory of ?Darwin. ?? ?She revalidated this with the transition of E-Mails to the world of Google/Face book/Twitter, Walkman to i-pods, telephones to sleek i-phones and desktops with tablets, a Doordarshan with limited hours of programming to 24*7 telecast on innumerable channels, Post office & Bank FD to managing financial portfolios. She explained the journey of HR from Personnel & Admn. to Human Resource being a strategic business partner and she fees that HR is still evolving. She felt that Innovation in HR is a necessity and not a choice, because of changing environment and business scenario, demanding & well informed customers, handling a diversified workforce and constraints of cost and profitability targets.
Ms. Ishita defined Human Capital as the sum of a workforce?s skills, knowledge and experience and Human Capital Management as a strategic responsibility increasingly shared by all the organization?s leaders. A strategic approach to marshaling, managing and maintaining the human capital needed to maximize organizational performance. She shared some of the recent findings that 36% revenue spent on Human Capital (HC) Expenses but only 16% expressed anything more than a moderate understanding of RO(HC)I. Also that CEO?s see HC as a key Value Driver ? 92% link it to Customer Satisfaction, 82% link it to Profitability,72% link it to Innovation and New Product Development, 49% report that investors are beginning to ask about HC issues,23% report Boards involved in HC issues and in two years 36% expect such involvement. She shared some of her experiences in bring about innovative changes in her organisation.
Mr. Murli Dhar Shyam, Head Human Resources ? India, ATC Tower Company of India Pvt. Ltd., talked about human capital management. He emphasized on human values and culture of organizations for facing the future.
The second Technical session: Innovation in Strategic Alignment of the HR and Innovative HR Frameworks was chaired by Mr. Ashok Grover, Director, Skillscape. Mr. Grover talked about Global Talent Management Survey and shared the findings. A survey conducted by Softscape Research in 2008 interviewed more than 200 HR leaders from around the world representing a diverse collection of more than 20 industries ,evenly distributed among large enterprises (more than 5,000 employees; 54% of the sample) and small- and medium- sized organizations (100 ? 5000 employees; 46% of the sample).
Some of the survey results he shared were: (74%) Integrated talent management is mission critical. (70%) organizations with integrated talent management strategies have better financial performance. (66%)? linking learning management to other core talent functions yields stronger revenue growth,(56%)? succession planning impacts sales growth, and (52%)? increased focus on performance measurement is critical to identifying and retaining high performers. The research showed that outstanding performers typically deliver four to six times more performance than average performers. He advocated shift from a reactive to a proactive approach ? from Talent Management Process to Talent Management System.
Mr. Sumit Chaudhuri, Chairman and Managing Director, Third Millennium Business Resource Associates Pvt. Ltd., in his talk said that organizations have to strategize quite differently for different situations in different organisations at different points in time like cricketers have for test matches, one day internationals and T20s and even during a particular game.
Ms. Pritha Dutt, Consultant-HR & CSR -, Ex. Sr. Vice President Bharti Tele Ventures Ltd., while looking ahead at innovative HR frameworks, said that the recognition that business has no option but to be ?responsible?. Business Responsibility refers to the commitment of an enterprise to operate in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner while balancing the interests of diverse stakeholders. She gave examples of the power of individual vs. unions in a connected world and the diversity in the workforce.
Ms.Pritha said that Leadership resides in everyone, not the traditional model of hierarchy based leadership. She mentioned that Role Descriptions and not Job Descriptions should be followed, and Talent Search to discover unique leadership for every individual. She also suggested that organizations should manage environment not people, in appraisals discuss ?what worked? not ?what did not?, understand what makes for an engaging work environment and blend life in work. She also emphasized HR leaders to think about Human Rights not just Human Resources, to be ethical and transparent, celebrate diversity, while respecting universal rights and providing career and personal fulfillment.
Dr. M.S.Rau, Executive Director, ISTD, shared his experiences as a hard core HR person for 36 years. He narrated how personnel administration has come up to be called HR.
Change is stressful and difficult. Human beings are creatures of habit. When people want change they typically mean that they want others to adjust or they want a system or rule to be modified. People very seldom want to change themselves and even when they want it, they are often unwilling to do what it takes to bring about the transformation. This is no different in relationships. We typically want our spouses to change and of course we ourselves don't need any changes, right? Most couples who come see me when things go wrong, blame their spouses and want them to change. Most times they deny any problems of which they are accused. Today we are not going to talk about changing as people though; we are going to talk about external changes that impact our relationships.
His company wants to relocate him and she does not want to move to a different city. She wants to have children and he is not ready yet. She wants a bigger home or he wants a new car. Regardless of what the change is, we all face change, that is for certain. Change can happen to us without our consent; such as losing one's job, disability from an accident, and so forth. Change impacts our relationships whether we like it or not. Sometimes such alteration is good and sometimes it is disastrous. So how can we manage change to minimize any potential negative impact on our relationships?
1. When possible, honestly and deeply discuss the potential change with your spouse and find out how he or she feels about it.
2. If the change is optional, make the decision to change together; both spouses need to agree and take responsibility for the decision together. If things go wrong a joint decision eliminates any blame games.
3. If possible, take change slowly. Introduce the changes in steps, with time in between, to get used to the change.
4. Accept one change at a time, don't lump many changes together. Every change happening together builds on all the stress of each individual stress until it becomes overwhelming. Changing careers, moving, getting married, and having surgery all within a few months, for example, is not a good idea. If possible, stagger these changes over time.
5. Build on your strengths and accept changes in the areas which you feel confident in.
6. Make sure you are healthy and getting enough exercise before taking on any changes.
7. Be positive.

Now a young Danish scientist has found a natural substance in a Chilean rainforest plant that effectively supports the effect of traditional treatment with antibiotics.
PhD Jes Gitz Holler from the University of Copenhagen discovered in a research project a compound that targets a particular resistance mechanism in yellow staphylococci. The development of resistance in these specific bacteria is extremely rapid. Bacterial strains that do not respond to treatment have already been found in the USA and Greece.
"I have discovered a natural substance in a Chilean avocado plant that is active in combination treatment with traditional antibiotics. Resistant bacteria have an efflux pump in their bacterial membrane that efficiently pumps out antibiotics as soon as they have gained access. I have identified a natural substance that inhibits the pumping action, so that the bacteria's defence mechanisms are broken down and the antibiotic treatment allowed to work," explains Jes Gitz Holler.
Jes Gitz Holler gathered specimens of the plant, which comes from the Persea family, in Chile, where the Mapuche people use the leaves of the avocado plant to heal wounds. The results have been published in Journal of Microbial Chemotherapy.
Synthetic chemistry for sustainable production
The so-called MIC value is the lowest possible concentration of an antibiotic that inhibits the bacterial growth. With his compound from the medicine chest of the Mapuche people, Jes Gitz Holler can lower the MIC value by at least eight times:
"The natural compound has great potential and perhaps in the longer term can be developed into an effective drug to combat resistant staphylococci. At this time there are no products on the market that target this same efflux-inhibitor mechanism. We want to improve the active substance using synthetic chemistry in the laboratory. That will also ensure sustainable production of a potential drug while protecting rainforest plants," continues Jes Gitz Holler.
Jes Gitz Holler emphasises that a commercial product will benefit the Mapuche people. At present there is a written agreement between the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the representative of the Mapuche people, Alfonso Guzmn, PhD, who helped procure the plant material.

It is simply too expensive relative to possible earnings, and there is more money in drugs to treat chronic diseases such as diabetes. Therefore, the bacteria are winning the race resistance increases and treatment options are scarce. Research will have to find new paths and natural substances are one of them," emphasises Jes Gitz Holler.

That?s a question that several legal bloggers have been positing over the last few weeks. The concerns largely stem from studies suggesting that the long-term effects of concussion injuries (which are quite common in football players, including those at the age level of high school and younger) may be far more severe than anybody thought. This is focused around the revelation that suffering large numbers of very minor concussions (which are extremely common in football) significantly increases the long-term risk of severe brain disorders, such as Parkinson?s disease.
