UMW Roundup: Women's, men's soccer; field hockey; cross country ...

Freshman Jessica Bednarcik scored with 21 seconds left to give the University of Mary Washington women?s soccer team a 5?4 win over Averett on Saturday at the Bridgewater Invitational.

The Eagles (2?0) trailed 3?0 early less than 13 minutes into the game, but rallied thanks to two goals by Bednarcik and one each from Adrian Newcomb, Erin Reynolds and Excy Herrera.

MEN?S SOCCER
Freshman forward Patrick Kelly scored the lone goal as UMW beat Hampden?Sydney 1?0 in its opener despite playing down a man for 56 minutes after a red card. The Eagles will host Eastern Mennonite Sunday at 1.

FIELD HOCKEY
Florence George scored the eventual game-winning goal and had an assist in UMW?s season-opening 3?2 win at 16th-ranked Lebanon Valley.
Amy Stevens and Lisa Charney also scored for the Eagles, who will host Roanoke Tuesday at 4.

CROSS COUNTRY
UMW?s men placed fourth and the women fifth at the Salisbury Invitational on Saturday.
Freshman Nick Eghtessad finished eighth (26:58 for 8,000 meters) for the UMW men. Scott Plunkett was 14th (27:16) and Corey Lyons 17th (27:27).
Sophomore Tara Landy was the Eagles? top finisher (11th, 23:21). She was followed by Caroline Cerand in 20th place (23:40).
