Hoping to get the slightest semblance of pre-break momentum, the Liberty came up empty.
The Washington Mystics defeated New York 70-53 at the Prudential Center on Friday.
The win was only the fourth (4-14) for the Mystics. The Liberty dropped to 6-12. With a month of soul searching and pondering facing them prior to the second half of the season.
Washington | New York | |
Possessions | 74 | 80 |
Offensive Efficiency | 95 | 66 |
eFG Pct. | 46 | 33 |
FT Rate | 34 | 12 |
OREB Pct. | 23 | 38 |
TO Rate | 16 | 26 |
PPWS | 1.01 | .74 |
The ?half full' crowd can point to the Liberty rebounding the ball better on the offensive glass. They enjoyed a 13-7 edge in raw numbers on offensive rebounding. Realistically, little else went right. They shot poorly (1 of 15 from three) did not get to the line, turned the ball over an excessive amount of times and could not get the Mystics to do the same.
The Liberty did shoot well (88%) from the line. They were 8 of 9 from the charity stripe. Getting to the line for nine free throws is a hint your attack is too perimeter oriented. Washington, by contrast, was 19 of 28. That 67% percentage needs improvement but the fact they shot nearly four times the free throws the Liberty did suggests they were getting ample opportunities in the paint.
The Liberty's defensive efficiency of 95, respectable. The offensive efficiency of 66, not to sound trite, was offensive.
Liberty had 21 turnovers to Washington's 12. Essence Carson (5) and DeMya Walker (4) contributed to almost half of the Liberty miscues.
The scoring leaders and their efficiency:
Points | Efficiency | |
C. Langhorne, Wash. | 24 | 26 |
C. Pondexter, NY | 22 | 15 |
Crystal Langhorne just produced a rock solid game. The proverbial ?difference maker'. Her efficiency line included an impressive 10 of 15 shooting from the field, six boards and just three turnovers.
Cappie Pondexter paced the Liberty in scoring. Pondexter committed only one turnover against three assists. Her 9 of 23 shooting from the floor took its toll in the efficiency column.
The next game for the Liberty is a home date with the Connecticut Sun on August 16th. New York planned to enter intermission on a positive note. Instead they finished half way on a three game losing streak. Until play resumes coach John Whisenant and staff will be quite occupied just determining and improving the direction this club is headed.
