? ?This is my dog, Petey. If something happened to him, I would be devastated. But if ? ? something happened to ME, what would happen to Petey? ?I am fortunate in that I have a husband who loves him as much as I do, but if something were to happen to both of us, who would take care of him? How do I know he won?t wind up in a shelter, put down if no one comes to claim him, or claimed by someone who can?t love him as much as I do?
That?s why part of my will includes instructions for Petey?s care. Not only have I named who gets him if I pass away, but I have also made a provision for his care that are contingent upon his being cared for by people I trust to love him.
If you think you don?t need a will that includes your dogs or cats because you aren?t as wealthy, remember this: ? what did you spend at the last vet visit? What does it cost to feed your friend and keep him or her in Tshirts and busy bones? ?Your family or friends may want to take your pet, but the financial burden might seem to great. Even a small provision for their care that is contingent upon taking and caring for them can make it easier for loved ones to step into the caretaking role.
